SL-65 modification warnings

Just thought I would let all of you know who modify your SL-65's. As most know we have one which ran 10.85. Currently with all we have in it and running 109 octane fuel the tranny apparently cant handle more then 790-800lbs of torque. We have gotten the car to the point when we launch the tranny will disengage and makes the car appear to be in neutral. Friday we had placed it on the Dyno and when it hit 795lbs in 3rd gear it did the same thing. Im still checking into it but it appears that if you get it to this limit, you might have to have the tranny redone by Renntech in order to handle the power output.

Once I get more information from the owner of Renntech ill let you know pricing information and weither it will help or not.

in some ways it isnt but when you figure you spend between 5k-10k per mod to the car and then have to take it off to reduce power it just turns into waste money. which is why i figured i would say something, from what im gathering the tranny rebuild is about 3-4k plus shipping of the tranny and then labor

That's my understanding - that the tranny's engineering/functioning limit is right at about 800 ft lbs.

I do think that both Renntech and MKB offer a tranny reworking though -- so good that you're checking on that.

Do let us know what you find out. And thanks.

I spoke with the owner of Renntech, and basically the problem is we have reached the torque limits of the tranny. It runs about 2800-3000 for the tranny to be redone. Then you have the cost of Labor for removing and reinstalling the tranny, and shipping of the tranny.

The tranny upgrade increases the amount of torque the tranny can handle by about 15%, It also gives it a faster shift pattern and better performance. So for all you drag racing kinds... this might be a upgrade worth looking into.

$3000 to change the hydraulic settings ? You guys must grow money and wipe your dipsticks with it.

Disassemble, R&R clutches & gears, reassemble, plus reprogramming. Not cheap, but not outrageous either.

Stick to installing Parktronic and folding mirrors in cars. There is WIS to hold your hand there.

Let the rest of us enjoy upgrading engines, transmissions, and suspensions. Every time you respond to a power upgrade thread you state how it is impossible, to expensive, or hazardous.

Dem is gold plated gearz huh? but dem gearz work real good!

That does not sound like something very positive. Please inform us when you solve the problem.

I know I am bringing this back from the dead but my s600 with renntech Ecu/Tcu did the same thing yesterday. I was getting on her a bit and after a first gear stint it went right into what I thought was nuetral. I was stranded in traffic with horns beeping. I turned the car off and then on and it engaged, luckily.

I dont think I have 800ftlbs of torque at the wheels though. I wonder if its the same problem you are describing? Would the dealer be able to handle this problem if it was caused by something else?

Finally, will I loose my TCU upgrades if the dealer started replacing parts with the tranny?

Steve

This is crushing my hopes and dreams.

Had a pipe dream of S65 in a year or so with ECU, then.......a gentle bit of NOS.

Hoping for a mid 10 sec or lower monster.

Guess tranny is the weak link then.....heh heh, weak as in not able to handle near 1000ft lbs of torque.

Yea we took it to Dynocomp to have it sent out to Florida, As of right now ( pending changes on going with a few more upgrades) we are having the tranny, high flow cats, intercooler work and possibly having a 2nd throttle body put on the car.

For all those wondering about the tranny, once Renntech redoes it, the car has no problems handling the torque of the car. Once the car is done ill post the results of how it does. We are expecting some pretty good numbers out of it.

[QUOTE=Casper356]. As most know we have one which ran 10.85

What mods did you have to run that time??Does ECU flash from Renntech make adjustments based on the ocatne of fuel you run? So you can run 92 on street and 110 at the track??

We had ECU/TCU, rear links, Renntech Air box and ran 104 octane fuel when we made that pass. Granted we had alot of help from having custom 17in rims so we could run Mikey Thompson Drag Radials.

so mods are able to be done on the sl65? ecu reflash, redone tranny, high flow/race cats, larker intercooler, airbox, and second tb? are you guys able to enlarge the tb or mas?
