Electronic Consumers Offline?

I had spoken with my service advisor and he stated that this is common and will come on if the car hasn't been driven for a while (2 weeks) and that all it needs is to be driven, so I did so and the very next day the same message came up. The top won't work, the seats won't work, and niether will the radio, anyone else have this problem, I'm taking it to the dealer on Monday, but I was just checking to see if any of you guys have had this occour. Thanks.

How old is your car? When mine was new, it could go a couple of weeks of inactivity before giving this alert; now at 21 months it only can go 1 week. Depends on how old the battery is I would suspect.

But after driving it a short distance, the alert goes away and stays away (for a week anyway).

I had this too not so long ago. Not too long after these messages started to appear (which they did more and more often with shorter intervals) I had the battery changed.

Apparently there is quite a drain. And charging and decharging all the time limits the lifetime of the battery somewhat.

If the problem persists after a long drive: change the battery.

It's the problem with the battery. It happened to my C320 and had my battery changed. Since your car is relatively new, you don't need to worry about the generator yet.

This is quite common if not driven regularly and the car is a couple of years old.
Since the SL has two batteries with the large one (in the trunk) being for the consumer electronics and the sensotronic brakes, any drop in battery power will dedicate the remaining power for the brakes first and take the less important stuff offline.
When you drive, consumer electronics come back online in sequence, based on importance (seat heaters and reading lights last). This can easily take 10-15 miles.

The whole problem is Mercedes. The car electronics does draw about 80 mA. from the battery, when standing in the garage. That will flatten the batteri within two weeks.

Buy a 3 or 4 step tricle charger, and connect it to the service battery, when your car is in the garage. That will solve the problem.

You can buy it here: http://batterytender.com/product_info.php?products_id=2

At least on the E Class it's not the battery but rather the Battery Control Module - a little black box in the trunk. There is a TSB on this. I had the same issue and that fixed it with no further problems.

I assume this is about an SL**AMG ?

Battery drainage is a well known problem on SL´s. Due to the constant power consumption, and the fact that most SL´s are not everyday car´s, and often left in the garage for longer periods, this problem occurs, and i know for shure that there is nothing wrong with my Control module. By using a tricle charger, you always have the full pleasure of your SL.
I have been using a tricle charger for seven month now, and sice it was added, all problems are gone.

I am not an expert on E Class.

Does the E class have a starter battery, as well as a Service battery ?

We have the problem a LOT on our R230. Dad drives the X5 often when I'm not driving the X5 (which when that happens, happens for long periods at a time)

Yes there are supposedly 2 batteries - small one in the engine compartment and a big one in the trunk.

You connect directly at the battery in the trunc. Use the fixed terminals provided with the charger. Leave the charger connected, in the trunc, while you are driving. Only connect to power source when left in garage.

So, the electrical systems are very mutch alike in the SL and E class. In your case it proberbly was a malfunctioning BCU, but in most cases the problem is power consumption from electrical system, when car is left in garage.

yes mb makes trickle chatger... all the battery problems will be solved if you plug in a trickle charger... i have 2003 SL55 ... i drive only in summer... the rest of time it is in storage under cover and trickle charger on board to the consumer battery( the one in the trunk)...you might get a critical message....the car is too low...if car has been parked for a while... in that case just start the car then raise the car using the center console switch
good luck

Thank you guys, you are pretty damn knowledgable when it comes to these things. I got lucky and had a spot open up today, I took it in this morning and basically was given the run down that the system was not holding a charge due to long periods of inactivity. They replaced both batteries under warranty, but said they usually don't do so. It's nice to have a good service advisor and luckily I got it in and out without any issues. So far no problems, I will see from here though.

When I went on vacation I got the same thing. I didnt drive it for a month. I got a new battery and an AC charger from the local dealership. So when I don't drive the car the AC plug in still charges the battery for me with out the engine on.
