Check your pump - Continued

I thought that this was so important as to warrant a new thread. Thanks to Marcus's great post I had my codes checked when I went in for service. Here's a quote from the repair order:

"Customer states engine loses power" (this is important so they don't charge you for the code check) "Low Temp circuit coolent pump no engine light but had stored code for intake air temp too high. Elc. ck amps draw from low temp circuit collent pump 8.3 amps rated to be under 7.5 amps. Causes relay to shut the pump down which lets the Kompressor over heat the charged air then the ME shuts off the Kompressor"

Again, thanks to Marcus for the original post.

Thanks!

Monday for the SL55 and then Thursday for the E55... Used your 'power loss' line and I'll see what comes of it...

Thanks,

I am still a bit of a loss of how this pump relates to the V12's.

Anybody have a clue?

You dont have this pump on a V12. The V12 is turbocharged, and therefore has an Air/Air intercooler fitted in the front of the car. Just relax, lean back and enjoy the trouble 55K owners have.

That was my thought as well but the original thread pointed to the 55/600/65. Hence my confusion

Sorry -- that is NOT correct. The turbo V12s use an air-to-water intercooler - pull off the engine cover and have a look for yourself if you're sceptical. My SL65, for example, has a air-to-water heat exchanger in the right front fascia just ahead of the front wheel which feeds a pair of air-to-water intercoolers located just behind the airboxes under the engine cover. Have a look for yourself - it's instructive and will eliminate any remaining scepticism

No disagreement here. Since this thread was a follow-up to another one that referred to the 55/600/65 pump problems, I was stating my confusion of why those V12 models were even mentioned before.

Just stating the obvious

That is incorrect. The 55s, 600s, and 65s all have very similar air-to-water cooling setups as Treynor mentioned. Anyone with forced induction on their MB should have this checked! I am glad I was able to help someone out, remember - it doesn't hurt to ask. There is a new part number now which should hopefully eliminate this problem.

In the last week I replaced one of these pumps on an SL55 because of excessive noise. This one did not have the DTC set, but after the ignition was shut off you could hear it running. It did not sound too healthy.

Yesterday I put one into a C32 b/c of a power complaint at highway speeds and the DTC stored in the ME.

The setup on the V12's is a little more involved than the K cars and most of the time indicates an air pocket in the system. There is a special tool for the 12's, just like the one used on the Maybach to bleed the intercooler circuit.
