Today, 500 hp cars on the market are rare and high dollar($200k+), but it appears in the future that there are an awful lot of them coming in the low $100k level. A year from now when given the choice of paying way over retail or ordering one of the alternatives many buyers are likely to take the latter choice. People were paying $15k over sticker for M3's less than a year ago. Try and sell one for that now. Mercedes, alone is about to have how many different alternatives?

I don't understand what is going on in the States. Here in Switzerland there is plenty of supply, and most dealers have at least one SL 55 on the show romm that can be bought al or below list ( 3 - 4 % discount maximumum), not to metion SL 500s.

Give it another 6 Months and we will see that in the US as well...the economy ain't what it used to be...and there are alot of high horsepower cars due out in the next year...those who have the money are going to have alot of options...those who ordered to speculate are going to have a surprise unless they sell their cars quickly.

Same here. I am going to pick up my SL 55 on tuesday. I have not signed any contract yet, and I am playing one dealer against the other.
Both have a fuly loaded silver SL 55 on display. I am trading in a november 2001 regular SL 500 with 12'000 K on it, and the issue is of course trade in value.
Right now il looks like 5% discount on the AMG and a 155'000 Swiss Francs trade in price for the SL 500, which I paid 180'00 Francs minus 5% discount in november 2001. Just like the good old fish market!
I will keep you posted on the outcome!

There can't be many places where you can get an SL at discount, maybe Germany and obviously Switzerland. My cousin in London tells me they'd laugh at you if you asked for a discount and even MSRP in the US is not a certainty...

If you are not on the list and ask a dealer to "give me an SL55 this month".. you will either be laughed at, told to wait 3 years, or pay a hefty premium.
