11.5 in the SL65

Ran my SL65 this weekend at the strip.....

11.5 @ 122 Bone stock with Drag Radials

With more practice on the drag radials, the car has more in it. Best 60' time was still 1.7X.

Track prep was very good and the cold weather was great!

I will post time slips in the next couple of days.

Good job!! I am going to hit he track this weekend. Do you know if 101 in the tank will help? I am trying to hit 12.0-12.2 on streets. ( i am at 5500ft) I have some new bfg drags but would need to buy rims and I am not sure I want too. I only go a few times a year. My best 60ft was 2.119 the first and only time I ran my car at 114.7. I am going to try and drop it down to a 1.8 at least?? Do you plan on modding your car if so what company are you going to use?

I ran 101 while at the track this trip. Came in on fumes and picked up 5 gallons. Did not run it without, so I don't know if it helped.

I have run on this track before on street tires. Typical times were in the 11.7 11.8 range with a best ever of 11.69 in full stock trim. That run was a 1.8X 60' time on stock RE050's.

The car can still run quicker that it did. A couple of people have been able to get down in the 1.6X 60' range. I only got down to 20 psi before I had to qualify for the Quick 8. (didn't want to screw around then....)

Not planning any engine mods until I get the traction issues solved.

These cars are FAST. The only car that beat me yesterday was a full on race car running Hoosier Street Slicks. Put down a 10.7 or so to put me away.....

Fun time, let me know how your car does at the strip.

You have to launch different then we do. I think the 65 is easier to launch then the 55. My k2 E55 loved to spin and spin and spin some more. Due to some turbo lag I think the 65 gets off the line better. Some one correct me if they feel otherwise. I know treynor told me to leave esp on. I am going to try a few things this weekend. I let you know what works best?

Treynor and I run the cars in Dyno Mode (ESP off)
100 octane will make a HUGE difference in your trap speed and ET.
Good luck!

OK Just filled the car with trick 101 and will drive it around for 100 miles or so until I am down on gas. We will see if this helps my 1/4 times at all. I am going to run my stock tires. I may try esp off or dyno mode any tips? Should I air down my factory tires and light them up or just run normal? Should I hold the brake and get the rpms up to launch? Thanks Rog and Treynor.

My car is bone stock and runs a pretty consistent 11.6-7@ 122,123. I leave ESP on and nail it for the best times. I have tried esp off, holding the brake down etc. and the easiest way by far gives me the best results. I use normal super unleaded as well.

just wondering if they will let you run with the top down and roll bar up. would this change weight enough to help traction?

It varies by track.... I have been able to run with the top down but it did not change the outcome. If anything I ran a bit slower. It does not help traction.

These numbers are very impressive and all but...

If you go to the E55 forums, there are a few guys there who have hit 11.8-11.9's in their stock E55 wih PS2 tires. Not trying to put you down, but I would expect much faster times from a car with such an engine.

The track was Silver Dollar Raceway in Reynolds, GA.

You really can't compare the times that you have been reading about the E55's running 11.9's. For some reason, that track particular track is incredibly sticky and fast. 1.6X 60' times are INSANE on street rubber. Most people need to run slicks to get into that range.

If I was running at that track, I should have been running in the 11.0's or even 10.9's. As I mentioned, with more time to dial in the drag radials, I think this car will run 11.3. In drag racing circles, that will get you tossed off most tracks since we don't have all the required safety equip.

Most of the E55's that were running with us were in the 12.4 range with 60' times in the 2.0 range. I was running just about .9 faster than SL55's and E55's.

By the way, this 604HP beast tips the scales around 4680 lbs with my fat **** in it.

What is your car running at the strip?

Well ran again since my last post and got a best of 12.3 and a best trap of 119.3 so not to bad for 5500ft. My 60 ft really needs work I know if I can get down to the 1.6x60 I could run a 11.9 at this elevation. The last day was yesterday so I may go out of state or wait til march when the track opens. I may have to just get the et streets and new rims if I want to drop that 60ft. I tried everything yesterday from esp on/esp off braking not braking you name it. My wife ran the car too and got a best for her of 12.5@119.7 the best trap in the car to date (mine was 119.3). I took out the 101 oct and went to a 96/98oct but not sure if this helped or hurt me?

At that elevation it doesn't sound too bad. Did you have any other AMG's at the track?

The guys you are talking about must be some serious drivers because no E55's I have seen are in the 11's with just tires.

I had some trouble believing it myself, but check out the E55 forums. Like you guys said, it is probably perfect conditions, etc...but still, times don't lie. I'm sure that someone could get a stock SL65 to run low 11's at an ideal track with cool weather.

I've never ran my CLK at the strip (I was on my way to englishtown with friends but they all wound up crashing on the way there and I didn't want to ditch them). I'm guessing that if I really tried under ideal conditions I'll probably get around 12.8 or so. This is just speculation though, I could still have trouble breaking 13. I'll have to wait for next year.

No the last amg there was my 06 E55 K2/lsd and it ran a 13.06 at 107mph. That was with a 2.0x60 so with a 1.6x60 the car would a 12.6 max over here. The first day out in the sl ran a 12.6@114.7 and the best run out is the 12.3 with a 2.0x60. Not bad for a stock car with stock tires. I may try the et streets and go for that 1.6x60 and see if I can hit the 11.8 or 11.9 before I mod the car. I heard there was a guy there yesterday with a 996tt with 700hp and he ran like a 12.5 @ 114???? I saw a cayenne turbo s run a 14.4 all stock

101 Ocatane gas won't help you unless your ECU is tuned for it. In fact, it might even hurt you. All that higher octane does is it allows you to advance more timing and still keep the engine safe. So unless you have a tuned ECU with two maps, one for 91-93 octane and one for 101 octane, it won't help and you're just wasting your money.

Anybody want to go to a track rental at Maryland International Raceway on friday? I'm thinking about going and it would be cool if some other AMG's would come out. I ran a 11.8 @ 117.3 on sunday at test and tune. Looking for better numbers this weekend. I found that launching in 2nd gear helped eliminate wheel spin and got me 1.70 60'. Th enext tim eI go out I will power brake until I get to the point where I'm spinning off the line.
