but the slk55 was on top
followed by the sl600
last place was the sl55
thats how i remember it

Good memory! You are probably recalling the April 2005 issue that pitted an SL55, an SLK55, and a Boxster S against each other. Times were:I did a little more digging and learned that Evo did run an SL600 at the same track (Bedford Autodrome) in their June 2004 issue. The SL600 was pitted against an Aston Martin DB9. Times were:So here's a track where an SL600 ran faster lap than an SL55, although if we take that result at face value we have to accept a DB9 as being the fastest car of the bunch. Hmmm.

Yes, those were the figures, the slk more than half a sec quicker than the sl600, followed in one-tenth sec by the sl55. But thems so close that on a different day you could get a different order, i reckon. Besides, '07 hospwr rating have changed, suspensions too, who knows what goes now.
Looking from here either would suffice, if speed was all that mattered.
(Btw, i got the testers wrong, they're not the boys from tv, those are the Top Gear dudes, anuther mag altogether)

OK then, I agree i'll have to test drive both a 550 and the amg55. And i'll report once i do. many tanx...

ps. re the AMartin, several models came in much quicker than the Mercs, I recall the PCarerraGT was up top, Gallardo '06 and the KCxx following close behind, folowed by the P911Turbo and Z06, then STI and Astmrtns. The Mercs beat out the Nis Z, CaddyV's, and Jags, at least!

I'd be interested in your findings once you check them all out. Depreciation may not be much of a concern for you, but I confess its pretty hard to overlook.

A new SL 65 is $190k, give or take. '06's trade at $130 or so, and '05's for $100k.

SL55... similar story... $140 new, loaded. $100 for an '06, $85 for an '05, etc.

Those are VERY steep depreciation curves.

I found the SL600 nose-heavy, and despite the V12's huge torque, I liked driving the V8 cars better.

I've narrowed my choices to low mile used SL55's, or new SL550's with the AMG package.

benzworshiper: Are you from the SF bay area? You can always visit EuroElites. We have a couple of V8 engine doing upgrades every week. Maybe that will help you decide.

I love my SL55. I had ordered an SL65...and I loved it too.......primarily because I was able to sell my spot for $25K. The guy that bought it paid $211K out the door..........and just traded it for $100K.

AMG said that all these would be limited production......BS! If it was limited people wouldn't be getting killed on resale.

Yes, the depreciation on the V12 cars is painful to bear compare to the V8 SLs.
