fake bid
The seller started the bidding under a different name in the hopes of finding someone more stupid than he is.

It is illegal to use false bidding, but he could use a throw-away e-mail address or have a cohort.
If that is the only bid, he would owe a commission to eBay, but if the seller wrote to eBay that proper procedures were not followed by the winning bidder, the bid would be cancelled and the seller could then apply to get his listing fees and commission credited.
Ebay could even ban the bidder, but then it would be the throw- away address. That's how it goes with normal auctions.... I'm not sure if it is the same way with EBAY Motors.
Not having a reserve and getting a 40k bid looks suspicious.

bs auction..
notice how the bidder's name is kept private. that is obviously a bs bid. there's also a spot for a '03 cl55 on ebay that's up to $14.8k right now and 99% of the bidders are new members (including the seller). can you say scam?

New members aren't too surprising, simply because I can picture myself in the same position. I have never bought anything from ebay, although I had had an account for a while, and as such would be considered a new buyer.
My guess is the typical ebay trader's profile doesn't exactly match the typical ebay-car-buyer, and so to see them w/o prior purchases isn't really out of question.
But this 40k bit...uh...yeah.

I always wondered why someone would do this? Enlighten me please.
I will not participate in an auction that has this feature.
