New wheels, considering lowering (+question)

Hi folks. I just upgraded my wheels to the AMG Style 3 "new" 19". Looks right to me.

I am considering lowering a wee bit. I already had AMG lower it to this height and this is as low as it will go without modules or other tricks. I would like to use a module that does not require any cutting and splicing since I want to be able to return to 100% AMG.

As far as functionality goes I can appreciate the Carlsson module. Can anybody confirm or deny if their module will require cutting any wires? And is so, if there are any modules at all that do not require cutting any wires?

Much appreciated

I may be wrong but all require cutting. I used the renntech and did the install my self. You only cut like 4 wires and I used a quick connect set up so if I ever want to go back to stock I just unplug the module and plug the factory back in. Very clean and took about 20mins or so.

I have the Carlsson module, but I can't confirm or deny if it required cutting any wires. No problems though - I've hed it for two years.

The Carlsson lowering module is the only module in the market that doesnt require soldering. Cutting is a must for all modules as far as i can recall.

I had the Carlsson and there was no soldering but it was only a 30mm drop and it would auto raise the car about 5mm once I put the car in reverse or drive. Then when I would pull it in the garage and inch toward the wall you could see it lower itself. I am sure this is all part of the ABC system but I wanted a lower look. I switched to the Renntech which required soldering but now I have up to a 50mm drop and when I start and move the car it stays where it was before it was moved in relation to height.

Many sales representatives do not explain the fact that Carlsson has a speed variable sensor built within the ELM. Hence, the increment in height when reaching certain speed and a complete drop while at standstill.

Hmmm. I'll think and wait with the lowering. First the folowing in the next couple of weeks:

- AMG LSD
- AMG Speedshift plus (with the brushed aluminium flippers
- 030 brakes

And for the summertyres the 030 wheels (8.5x19ET25 and 10x19ET28)
When the iPhone arrives here (Q4) Bluetooth instead of Nokia 8210.

Monday the current wheels are going to be exchanged because AMG made a booboo by sending me the regular set (ET30 front ET31 rear) when I specifically asked for the 'wide' set (ET25 front ET38 rear). Order mess up probably.

Will post pictures if there is something to be seen...

I'm actually having the LSD done at AMGs in Affalterbach. Driving there next week, and they will install for €3.159 (~ $4100). Which seems to be at discount, since the LSD + installation is rated at €4.754 (~ $ 6.150) in the AMG Manufaktur catalogue.

The 030 brakes are installed by Steve of MBenzNL fame. If you want a quote on than mail him. He had a couple on sale as well, I don't know if I took the last ones: https://mbworld.org/forums/sl55-amg-sl63-amg-sl65-amg-r230/171843-amg-performance-package-front-brakes-sale.html

The AMG folks only install if you bring the car to them. I believe the problem had to do with any fidling with the steering wheel in the US requiring full admission testing again.

If anyone can help you it's Steve, so send him a PM or something.

The wheels have been exchanged again (proper ET values now). Just posting to be complete. I tried to make pictures in the exact angle as the previous ones. If you grab a microscope you can see the difference IRL you can see it better.

These show the difference best:

ET30 / ET31 (front / rear)

ET25 / ET28 (front / rear)

Just wanna correct myself in the previous posting. Carlsson lowering module doesnt require cutting (for the installation), soldering or splicing. Sorry for the misinformation.

Can you explain the 'speedshift plus'. Does this include the steerig wheel, or can you just add the paddles?

Aha! That sounds good. Thanks for the info. Perhaps lowering a wee bit is still in my future

From the brochure:

AMG Speedshift Plus (2)

two different shift programmes (M1/M2) with shortened shift times
additional selector assembled in the center console
shift paddles (brushed aluminium)
From what I understand they build the paddles on my existing steering wheel.

Ok folks. Last update for the time being. Just returned from AMG in Affalterbach to have the LSD installed and Speedshift Plus. Of the LSD I don't have pictures for obvious reasons. But my MY 03 now has aluminium shift paddles and an extra button to select the manual program.

It seems however that the automatic S(port) mode is also a lot more assertive with up/down shifts. I now no longer have a C(omfort) setting.

The manual mode in M1 is kind of how it was in manual. But the M2 mode is indeed a lot quicker (more direct). It ain't no CLK DTM which shifts brutally tight, but it's the same idea.

Together with the brakes, which I had the chance to test on the German Autobahn and work great, I think the LSD and Speedshift Plus are a great investment to make the car feel a lot more sporty. After the first oil change of the LSD @ 1.000 miles I'll give it a real spanking.

Oh yeah, I decided against lowering with a module because of all the crap I have had to endure with the ABC struts (all replaced). I just don't want to take any chance, how good the module may be.

Pictures of the Speedshift Plus:
