SL55/63/65/R230 AMG: Renntech SL 600 vs. SL 65

Renntech SL 600 vs. SL 65
Found a screamingly good deal on a barely used Renntech SL 600. Also found very good deals on slightly used SL 65's. If this is my toughest choice, then life is very, very good.

Depends on whether you want essentially the same straight line thrust or all of the AMG accoutrements. I personally would take the 65 because of the exclusivity, the brakes, the tweaked suspension, more displacement, AMG gauges, wheels, etc.

I have been waiting since 2005 for someone to race a SL65 against a Renntech SL600.
I have no doubt that the 600 engine can be tweaked up to 600+ HP. I don't believe that it can be bumped to 700 without huge risk.
I am still waiting to see a SL65 get beat at the drag strip by a Renntech SL600.
Stock for stock 11.69 to 12.8 same day same track.

I feel better that I still see 65's at the top of the list
My comment was more based on the fact that the two cars are never at the track on the same day running in the same conditions.
It would be fun to see how close they really were. As much as I hate to say it I am very sceptical of all of the HP claims that they make for the SL600.
The quickest my SL65 has run was 11.45 stock on drag radials and that was still with a 1.82 60' time.
Running on a track where I could run 1.58 to 1.65 60' time should put my car in the low 11.30's.
Tuned SL600 are certainly quick but so are tuned SL65's. My understanding is quite a bit of work needs to be done to a SL600 to get it to run in the low 11's. It is not just an ECU reflash.
Dollar for dollar, I say pick up a used SL65 for 100 to 110 and tune that.
Just my .02

Like i said above i think lous and joe have raced before on the same day side by side same track, i could be wrong but there may even be a video of it. you have no need to be skeptical, not sure what figures u have seen but the ones i have seen are legit, including my own dynos.

It is not just an ECU reflash. this is not true, just an ecu flash and I ran an 11.22 and I have seen stephens s600 with renntech ecu run 11.27's, my 11.14 is with ecu/exhaust/airfilters, im not sure if that is "quite a bit of work"

Thanks guys!! You guys have been supportive!!! hopefully when the intercooler conversion is completed and ready, you guys will be the first to test it out on the track!!

I'm less interested in drag times, and more in the overall balance of the car, quickness, handling etc. Both cars will cost about the same. I must admit that my gut feeling is to go with the SL 65.

There's no doubt in my mind that an average Renntech SL600 is faster than an average stock SL65. I have both cars and I had the SL65 stock, and it was not as fast the Renntech SL600. Schiznick your SL65 is stock, but your quarter mile and horsepower numbers are much better than the avg SL65 stock. Your SL65 must be already optimized about as well as is can be when stock, which is part of what the Renntech ECU upgrade does to the car. You probably would not see as much of an improvement as someone else since an already well optimized car will not translate into an above average gain from the ECU upgrade. You guys would come out about even after the upgrade.
