3. Consensus is '05 and '06 cars have fewer problems on average but some '03 and '04 cars have been perfectly reliable and some '05 and '06 cars have had issues. A reasonable way to hedge your bet is to get a max length CPO warranty.

Good luck and enjoy!

agreed... your case is different, i wouldnt even wait for better deals.... just do whatever u want ... the car is worth it...

There really is nothing parallel to the SL and to step up means you are going to a Bentley GT or Lambo.

My only turnoff is the fact they are facelifting the damn SL this year. Alot of 55's are in the 50's now....will this car keep tanking? If I bought a 55, I would keep it for 2 years and sell it....before the R231 came out. How much do you guys think it will tank once the new facelift (in 2009) comes out and they change it to the SL63? I just don't want to buy one now for $55k and then in a year once the update and 63 is out it's worth $35k.
Correct me if i'm wrong but I believe the new SL63 comes out in 2010 and from what i've already seen in her is that she is UGLY. The new 63 is'nt as aggressive looking as the ones we currently own so therefore I truly believe that consumers will still fight to either keep or get a hold of SL55's. With that being said you probably can expect the price to drop but not dramaticly at all. Sl's tend to hold their resale value better than any other Benz. The Cl 55 is also very nice and you should be able to purchase one with low miles for about 55 to 65k depending on the year. I own both and i'm considering on buying an 05 CL 55 for my wife. I definately will hold on to my SL 55 for a good minute as she only has 30k and she is an 03. Whatever you decide get a good 4 year 100,000 mile extended warranty on either of them and you'll be fine. I like to say It cost to be the Boss. SL 65 were can you actually open her up at here in the states unless you live in Arizona?? Food for thought we can't spend your money.

Car Whore
I really want to jump back into an SL55 but torn between it and a 335i.
I know the 335i is slower, but it would be brand new and best of all has newer technology. I would modify it to the brim and get it to at least 400RWHP.

The SL55 calls for me though, I really love it but hate the older technology (in-cabin electronics). I'm also very worried about ABC failing, or one of the struts because that is EXPENSIVE work($8k~) to have to pay out for such a fast depreciating car.

I want to purchase it outright and my budget is $53k-$55k cash so I'd have to settle for a high mileage 03-04 which makes the warranty issue bigger.

What do you guys think?

Then don't buy one now because that is exactly where the 55's are headed in the time frame you suggest. I unloaded my 55 just after the face lift news was released.

When people start to search out these cars, when they are no longer in production and they find that good ones are harder and harder to find, I think that prices will firm up and even rise.

As for right now, they are used cars and if you want to play.....you might have to pay!
yeap sure just like the e55 did when the e63 came out. Mercedes is all about having the latest and greatest car. It's a status symbol that fades fast and no one wants to get caught in the old looking car. Trust me on this one. As a matter of fact I am so sure about it I will buy you a brand new one if the values go up on the old ones. So sure that it's a bet I will make with you with absolutly nothing on your end to wager. And I will put it in writting.

Agreed ..... Nice clean low mileage non-abused '05 SL55s will be $38K to $40K in two years.

I agree ... I've been trying to buy one for my 86 year old father (peeking around the left side of the photo below) but unfortuately he won't drive Japanese or German cars due to the wounds he still carries from WWII, which is both sad and nonsense in my opinion ..... he wants a new AWD Ford Fusion, much to my disappointment and frustration.

Don't downgrade to a 335i. If you want something sporty and modern, and money's not too much of a factor, spend more and get the new M3. The M "bits", like the AMG "bits", make the car feel so much more special than a chipped 335i ever will.
