OK, you helped me decide but....
I'm all confused about color
Here's what I was thinking. Brilliant Silver with berry/aluminum interior. But Obsidian Black is also under consideration.
But what would look unique, not effiminate, and not so ugly that the cute babes would look at me like I have no taste.
The blue looks so cool.
Any opinions about options is also good. I need to make a decision by mid next week for the order.
I was thinking of parktronic (I have a tight garage, and I don't want to hit my Porsche), bi-xenons, and v60 phone.

Essentials...
Parktronic & bi-xenons are now essentials, IMO.
Car looks great in silver. Lots about, but does show it off best. Some blues looks classier, which blue did you mean?
Do you not have a Nokia option, or is it just V60?

I've said before a silver car doesn't attract much attention, it's just another silver Mercedes, if you're looking for a babe magnet, I guess black might be better, don't know, I'm too old for all of that, i have to rely on them appreciating my intellect instead....
Except for Black/Black, I like a contrast between outside and in, and silver with alpaca looks rather boring. I'm very happy with my silver/red; but for the fact I already have a blue/grey SL, I might have gone for Tansanite/Jasper with Alpaca/Charcoal.
Agree about Parkronic, think also about tyre pressure monitoring. Keyless Go is fun, impressive, but of course does not change the driving experience.

pick a color that is not on every car that you see on the street,a color that you can live with and not hate it after a while.
In short, don't compromise ,don't think about resale now, make yourself happy first, life is way too short.

What ever you choose, just dont choose the pink color with pink interior posted in the AMG visit thread :p I think Berry Red interior is best - that leaves 4 choices for exterior color .. white too dull - silver too many floating around - black now thats a really nice color and catches attention but requires too much maintaince.. RED !! I am drooling over SL55Lova car - check out the pics in his thread - Red/Red is superb... my second choice would be black/red then silver/red. my .02 worth.. hope to afford one like you old timers soon hehe

Just went over and looked at my future neighbors SL55 it is Orian Blue with Ash Leather and Chesnut Wood. The Car looks
Stunning!
He also mounted a new Escort Radar detector/jammer were the middle cup holders use to be, looks factory.
He took me for a ride around town every time I looked over someone was giving us the thumbs up.
If you are looking for something different this Orian Blue should be considered, it looks like a Sky Vodka Bottle with and big engine and wheels (a chick magnet for sure)
He is 4 houses away from my new home so I am going with Silver Arrow silver first choice, if not Brilliant Silver is next, always looks great and shows the lines of SL great also.
Firemist red looks great too!
Good Luck

As for options I think Bi-Xenon and Keyless Go are a must, For saftey Tire presure monitoring should be added.
Then Parktronic, climate seats, Distronic if you want to spend 3000 cash is very kool.
Pano roof is personal preferance and phone can be added anytime, its not intalled untill it gets to the VPC.
I had every option on my 03 SL500 sport except pano roof, and put 13000 miles on it, so if anyone has any questions on options let me know.
For my SL55 I am ordering Bi-Xenon, keyless go, parktronic, tire presure monitoring, and the V60 Phone. I did away with the other options and added options to my new home.
Let me tell you I would much rather have a stripped SL55 then a loaded SL500, not to take anything away from the SL500, The SL55 is just that great!

I think Aegean Blue over Ash would be unique. Or, special order Orion Blue over Stone. If you want uniqueness, PLEASE stay away from Silver. I swear, some people act like that's the only color to choose from.
Just my opinions.
Just my opinions.

It's not so much the necessity or purpose, it's the aesthetics. The SL looks stupid with one pair of xenons and a pair of halogens. Two sets of xenons just look cooler. Besides, if a person is in the AMG league, why get cheap now?

I went with obsidian black/berry red. Got everything but the panoramic roof (I don't get that option, cause if it's beautiful outside, the tops down).
Opinions?

So there is a second pair of xenon lights for NORMAL driving? I thought it was xenon highbeams.
How do the lights function on the R230? You turn the switch and only the xenon lights come on? When you pull out the knob, the inner pair and the foglights light up?

You probly wouldn't want to use the high beams for normal driving because a) more power being used, and b) they present danger to oncoming traffic. However, it just makes more sense to have a MATCHING set of lights. They should've been standard but I guess Mercedes is really hurting for the $900.
I'm not sure how the activation mechanism works but I guess it would work the same as any other mercedes car.

I ordered my SL55 in obsidian black with charcoal/black interior which works well with the black "only" steering wheel.
I originally considered Pewter or Agean Blue, but when I looked at a VIP SL55 in agean blue/ash interior it looked good, but not spectacular. I also looked at a pewter SL500 Sport which turned out to be somewhat bland looking and very background.
Silver(both brilliant or diamond silver) is always a sure bet and the berry interior is the best choice IMO. The problem is that there are just too many silver SL's around to make the car stand out.
If you ever want to sell the car, anything besides black and silver may also be more difficult to sell (true on the SL500, mabe not the 55 but time will tell).
As for the pano roof, seems like people like it or hate it, but if you live in a colder climate where you need to have the top up often, it's a must have. Would you otherwise buy a sedan without a sun/moonroof? I wouldn't. Besides, I think it looks very cool on any color SL.
Keyless go-a must have for convenience, tire pressure monitor is important as you have no spare tire in the SL55, Bi-Xenon - a must have if you ever drive at night outside the city; it's just annoying that the identical option is $300 in Europe compared to $900 in the US.
Parktronic is very cool and helpful when parking in tight spots. I didn't order distronic because I haven't used a cruise control in years and am not planning to start now.
Cooled seats with massage - Since I had it in my CL500, I'll will always order it again.
The phone question came up again for me but I am just unwilling to pay $2000 for a phone that I can get for $100 anywhere else. I know that it offers the voice, steering wheel and other functions, but it's still a rip-off.
At least in Europe the Nokia phones are standard phones, not specially adapted Motorola phones like the US, allowing you to use different phone models from different cell-providers and still use all the Comand features. Besides the phone option is much cheaper.
When it comes to the interior trim, I personally like the walnut and was worried about scratching up the aluminum in time, but this is truly a question of taste.
My car is on the boat and should be showing up soon
