Currently at $152k with 62 bids!!

80% of those cars have been lingering around ebay for quite some time. Obviously, demand is not matching the supply. We as consumers determine the price of goods. Either the sellers must lower their reserves or they're gonna keep on fishing.

Which means for all we know the high bidder is a deadbeat sunglasses wearing 0 rated ebayer. Remember when the late night cable sales channels would trumpet how great a price their asking price was for some baseball card by showing an ebay bid sheet with some outrageous bid amount on it. One can't help question whether these ebay auctions are for real since there is no way to confirm whether the sale actually goes through other than by watching to see if the item gets relisted again - which for some of these high ticket items is a common occurrence.

I doubt you will not find a lower price at a dealer, if the things sells for $153,000.

there are 30 or more SL55 cars for sale on auto-trader, most of them are offered at 159,000 or even as low as 20-25 over sticker

What I don't like about Autotrader and DupontRegistry is that they don't keep the ads current. IMO if a car is sold, the advertiser should remove their ad, but instead they don't so that they can redirect interested consumers to other cars in their inventory.

Maybe prices are softening. The logic might be - this is a car for fine spring/summer/autumn weather - winter's coming - no need to buy now and prices will be lower then anyway.

I would expect prices to harden again come the spring but the overall trend has to be downwards.

An interesting micro-example of price deflation such as is afflicting Japan wholesale right now. "Prices will be lower in the future, I'll wait to buy" - result, severe economic problems.
