'03 SL55 vs. 04 SL600

Hi Guys,

I am contemplating buying a used 03 SL55 or an 04 SL600. From what I've read, they both have roughly the same performance (0-60 in 4.5). But I hear that the sound and "feel" of the engine on the SL55 is better than the SL600, even though the SL600 has the V12. Some say the SL55 might be more reliable cos of the V8 vs. the V12.

I wanted your thoughts and opinion on these matters. Is the SL55 a better choice overall from a ride, performance and price perspective?

Any input is much appreciated.

SL55AMG, Ferrari 348, Ferrari Testarossa, Ferrari F40, Ferrari Mondial t, Ducati 916, Indycar
We tune both of these cars, and they both respond very well. The 600 develops some serious torque after our tune. Our latest ECU/pulley on the 55 has dyno'd at 585hp/620 lb ft, so it is no slouch either. I personally like the way the chassis is set up on the SL55, and from a reliability side, my car has been brilliant.

I'm more of the opinion, that these cars (with their 2 tons) don't have much to offer in the turns anyway, so why have a bumpier car then necessary for no reason..?
And even if you wanna try it out on a track someday, you have to consider how often that's gonna happen...
I mean, even if you're on a track more often than most people, you're still 99% on the road.
So driving around with a chassie set for Nürburgring, doesn't make sence to me.

And about the sound, I personally think the 600 sounds a LOT better.
More smooth and silky-like, since you with a V12 don't hear the piston thrusts (or what you call it)...
Then you just take away the last silencors in the back, one on each side, and you'll get a sharpness to that sound that is hard to compare to anything!
Then with full throttle, you'll have a roaring beast, I can assure you that!

So comparing that sound, with the sound of a Messerschmidt Aeroplane from World War 2 (SL55), I have no trouble choosing...

About the tuning, I'm pretty convinced (and I think I speak for everyone now) that there's more power to gain from chiptuning a 600, than it is from chiptuning a 55!

And finally, to all 55-owners out there, I'm just speaking from my point of view here, and don't mean to step on anyones toes...

It's like ice cream, i guess. Some like vanilla, some like strawberry...

I had that same "problem". I took the 55...but then again i like AMG's

Imho SL55 > SL600 both in looks and sound. On the other hand i think the 600 will deliver more power if you want to mod the car.

This is my personal oppinion and i don't mean to upset anyone

AMG sure looks a lot better with the tips and their bumpers! I'll give you that.
But that's easily done on a 600 as well...

Is there anything wrong with the SL65? I wonder... How does the 65 compare to the 600 and 55?
