SL55/63/65/R230 AMG: Rim/Tire problems....
#26
Were the wheels chrome? Chrome wheels can leak air after a while because often the chrome plating on the inside of the rim (where the tire meets the wheel will flake off over time. Any time you get your tires dismounted and remounted on chrome wheels you must check for chrome flaking on the inside of the rim, and remove any loose flakes before the tires are mounted to the wheels.
With low profile tires like that, running them underinflated for just a very short time (even just a few miles) can cause the sidewall to crease and split, leading to a blowout. Those sidewalls are very stiff and very short in height, much different than a conventional taller passenger car tire, and very succeptible to damage if underinflated.
