Why o why would they put that silver engine badge on the side? I have seen it on the new SL65 in black and it looks like an open wound on the side.

Hopefully very few people will like the new car, forcing values of good SL55's through the roof!

....... well it was a nice thought, wasn't it?

I've said from the start it looks good, minus the tacky side gills. And the fact the rear diffuser is non-functional is a big, cheapo let down.

I saw a black SL63 in person at the dealership and it looked really good except for that silver piece on the side- did not look good, but maybe could just have that piece painted.

Great looking new SL - congratulations!
When you get the chance, let us know your opinion of the contrasting silver side pieces.
Do you like them?
Would you consider repainting them to match the car?
Curious on your thoughts with this.
Other then that - enjoy the car and welcome to the forum!!

I’m sure the new SL63 is fast and the style will eventually catch on.
..but it just makes me appreciate my ’05 SL55 even more!

this actually isn't my car, it was one at the dealership. I have one on order (capri blue with black interior)....overall i liked the look of this car over the sl55 (i feel that design was getting a bit too old) and think it looks much better in person than it does in most pictures. I think if it matched the exterior of the car it would be a bit better, but it's definitely not a deal breaker for me and i still like how it looks. I personally won't be repainting it because i plan on leasing for now, but if i bought it i'd consider it.

I agree that the SL63 looks alot better in person than in pictures. I've seen both the silver and black.

To me it's sad that MB has allowed the SL to evolve into this. I prefer looking at/driving the latest iterations as much as the next guy, but not in this case. I will enjoy what I have and eventually buy something different. I can't see paying $140K+ then having to "fix" it.

sl63 silver side badge

I've seen SL63s at the dealership, one in black, one in silver, as between those two colors, the silver looks better, not only because of the side grill, but the front end seems to work better as well. Black is not the best color for the SL63.

I e-mail directly to AMG about this and said that it probably was a showstopper for me. Since I hate to do aftermarket stuff to supercars like the SL 63 AMG I asked if they at AMG could paint the matte-silver painted AMG trim panels on the sides in my exterior color instead (black in my case). Today I got an very polite answer that said that they could paint all desired parts on the car to my liking including chrome parts or silver painted parts. So, no need for us to complain any more about this, just give AMG instructions on what to paint and they will do it! J

Regards
/Per

they should probably introduce a new option called "side grill color delete" or something and if you select it you just get a body matched colored side grill.

it'll probably happen in 2010 model year

Another black one came into the dealership by me and it looks 10x better in person than these pictures and even the side silver piece didn't look as bad for some reason though I'm not saying that part is great. At least in the front it is all black as opposed to the silver SL63 where there is the black piece at the bottom that doesn't look good. So each one has its issue.
The only other thing is the headrest that I don't care for- I don't think I will be using the airscarf anyway. I'd take the headrest from the SL55.
Other than that I think it looks awesome.

Saw one on the road the other day, and she's a real beauty. Two minor changes need to be the painting of the amber turn signal lights and the side vent. I love the redesigned front end, but MB really botched the side vents, IMO. As for the rear diffuser, it really screws with the lines of the rear.
