I don't think so. The general manager of MB Houston (North, or Greenway, whichever was larger - I don't remember exactly) is very close to a good friend of mine - so when I met him, he seemed to be very informed and up to date. for stuff he didn't know about, he was very prompt in makng full inquiry.

Richard,
Could you please send me your contact for the steering wheel order? I am trying to get the grey airbag aswell. How much did you end up paying?
Thanks.

Bad News...

All three F1 Safety Car Style Steering Wheels are not certified for the US market and will only be delivered to Mercedes-Benz dealers in the European Union.

Sorry!

Interesting info, but I am trying to figure out what exactly needs certification and who would certify that; unlike Germany where many aftermarket modifications need TUV approval and additional data entry to the car title, in the US you can slap on just about anything you want afterwards...

Anyway, isn't this the exact same steering wheel with the exception of the color and the alcantara?

Now what I would go for is this steering wheel, but heated. At 5 below Farhrenheit (-20 C) that is truly a useful feature and they have it on the SL500.

Btw, I agree with Ronald, I found that Alcantara can take an incredible amount of beating; actually more than leather, and can be easily cleaned. It will be interesting, however, how the color of the black instrument hood will be holding up against the Arizona or Texas sun.

I don't really know. I can just tell you what I was told by one of our board members, who specialized in AMG equipment at a Mercedes dealership.

Anyway, isn't this the exact same steering wheel with the exception of the color and the alcantara?
No, besides the alcantara, it ist made of a special 'soft touch' leather. It is also ergonomically formed and thicker due to a soft foam layer.

Probably Greenway, the reason i said the dealer was .. well stupid is because the salesman i had when we were inquiring on the SL and S600 is that he said sports package was STANDARD on the s600... i was thinking.. why is it a friggin package then?

he had many awards on his desk so i was thinking, if this guy gets the awards and not others.. well.. thats sad! but, on another note when we got my uncle a s500 the guy we had for our salesman was AWESOME.. maybe its because he was much much younger then the other salesman.. but hey!

i like the one at North because .. he just seems super nice! Haven't really quizzed him on the car stuff though. But if he doesn't know he doesn't lie to us and always calls people to double check.

btw: if you can hook me up with the general manager guy i can assure him a couple sales soon.

That steering wheel is nice, but I think anyone considering a steering wheel should contact Kleemann for pictures of their new wheel. It is beautiful, and has grips on the front and back.

PM on the way

btw: yah, Mr. Ben, do you have any pictures of the steering wheel? And can it be ordered by a dealer and stuff? I'm dead serious about getting a new steering wheel for my dad, my mom said she'd help me arrange most of it. But, the birthday is quite far away, but my birthday is soon! It'll be a give back present i guess!

Hmm, tough pick. Personally I like the look of the Alcantara wheel...the kleeman wheel looks very sculpted and 'chunky'...

It's all a matter of feeling them, I think.

KLEEMANN just cracked the software problems, so in near future
the AMG manual steering wheel shift can be installed into all none
AMG cars. The car has to come to KLEEMANN - Denmark - Germany
or USA, due to software coding.

Lucas, can you confirm that it won't be as sluggish as tiptronic shifting? (i.e, you dont have to shift a couple of seconds ahead) and what about people in other parts of the world?

Also, why would they have to crack the software? I thought they are mercedes-benz affiliates though mercedes should share such info with them i'd think!

I actually do like the look of it. I was annoyed that I was unable to make the wheel match the rest of the interior (grey) So by ordering the safety wheel I get a sportier feel and better look. But in the big sceme of things it doesn't matter at all.

It will work like in the AMG cars, not better, not worse.

MB / AMG do not hand over anything to anybody, tuning companies have to develop and crack software.

For some reason that makes me feel uncomfortable - what if I do get the steering wheel and Mercedes decides they are no longer warantying my transmission

IMHO quite right too. If you chose to try to make your car do something it was not designed and built to do then you can’t expect the manufacturer to warranty it.

AMG is Mercedes in house tuner, any other tuning companies parts should (IMHO) void the warranty.

Graham.

Is the wheel black on all SL 55's. My car has the ash interior and the black wheel looks bad.

It's like the old Ford motto; you can have it in any color as long as it's black.

You could buy the F1 steering wheel as described in this thread, but expect to spend at least $1K as you need to buy the steering wheel and the matching airbag.

Good luck!

Yes black only. My SL55 has ash interior and before I took delivery I thought a black wheel would not look right. I now think it looks fine - it matches the black alcantara instrument pod and ash/black gear shift lever.
