I always laugh when I see people talk about what's faster on the track. Do you drive on a track every day? The track is a whole different situation than real world driving in my opinion. I wouldn't base my ownership choice on track lap times for the cars. Drive both and see what you like. I had an 07 911tt, and traded on a sl55. It was a better fit for me. Comfortable, hard top convertible yet with enough "sports car" to embarass 99% of the cars on the road when need be. Both are great cars, it's what fits you best. Have fun.
The rest of your post is hard to argue with...the SL is undoubtedly a great car and a very capable one.

SL55 AMG S55 AMG Hummer H2
Porsche is a great car, had one myself years ago, but personally I'm stuck on AMG's and have been for many years now! Currently I have two, a SL55 and S55 and if you have driven both the SL63 and the 911-T you can certainly feel the all around difference between the two! So my vote would be for the SL63.... But it's all up to you!!!

When you talk about sports cars vs. Grand tourers and the like, you are catagorizing based on purpose and performance. The later of the two can only be sorted on a track of some sort, under similar conditions, and in a controlled environment. We're not talking highways or street, that's not an accurate theater to judge performance objectively. For example, anybody can build a 1000hp Job Spetter turbo mustang with 10.5" M/T Street et's and trounce an SL-anything on a highway, that's not a test of performance is it?
This said I like my SL55 a lot, it's fast, fun, it has a hard top convertible, feels good to drive on the road and highways etc...I'm not undermining SL's, I like them, I own one!! But it is not a sportscar, plain and simple. It is a very heavy, big engine, boulevard and/or high speed highway cruiser with a cool hardtop that comes down - it does what it was meant to do very well, so it serves its purpose and it is a great car, but in terms of performance as a sportscar there are better alternatives in the same or lower price range.

The whole car feels better planted, much more info through the steering
wheel.Completely different power delivery, proper 7 speed dsg tranny.
It's much more like a sports car and less like a GT car, in fact I was worried
it may be too raw, luckily it is still comfortable, and the sound...to die for.

I think if you drive the SL63 you will find it quite different to a SL55.

I'd love to play with a the all new SL63 on track ....MB club (our local chapter) holds 2 track events at Summit Point and one at VIR, maybe I'll have a student or two with the car! Would love to check out it's braking, handling, and transition characteristics... looking forward to it
on the track, very similar in a straight line though.
I have NEVER had a car that has aroused so much attention, my SL55 got a few looks and my CL65 got one or two at most, I think the reason for buying
the CL65 was to own the most powerful 4 seat production car ever made,
plus only 20 were sold in the UK.

SL55 AMG
Hi, I didn't buy the SL63 for track days, but I bet it would spank the SL55
on the track, very similar in a straight line though.

For track I'd use my race car, purpose built E36 M3L touring car

I wouldn't really take my SL55 on track, unless I was instructing at an MB club track day or something...to me it makes a great street/highway car; good for nice summer nights with the top down etc...gobs of power for exhileraiting bursts of torque goodness
For track I'd use my race car, purpose built E36 M3L touring car

a track, however I would love to drive a proper track car.

I guess everyone is entitled to their opionion. Go drive a turbo they are not close. For one thing the Turbo wieghts 3500 pounds. I love my SL but it is a GT. The Turbo is also faster. I had a Turbo walk my SL55 at 80mph plus. Don't pull up next to any Turbo's and try them with your SL63. It will yank the paint off it.

Hmmm, My quote said an SL55 I know that for a fact. I had one walk my 55. Would my SL65 take my Turbo? Not from a standstill It would be close from 60 on. Hard to say. Apparently not. From a 60mph roll the turbo walked from my 55. Looks like my 65 would take the turbo. Bench racing is fun.

Your quote said you love your SL, and *you* drive an SL65 according to your profile.
Whilst it's true you did say, "I had a Turbo walk my SL55...", that was after the aforementioned quote... So which is it, do you have an SL55 or SL65? Or... both...?

In thinking about it, you got stock 65s running mid 11s. Let's see what happens against a S65 vs. 997 Turbo. Seems to me "Carcommander" over there needs to have his SL65 checked out, considering he says the "Turbo is faster,"... the SL is faster then the S.
Which is it?

And yet strangely here you say:

Turbo I think it will be close, unless it's a windy road, then the Turbo will
definitely have the edge, in a straight line? I await the result.

CL - 4500
S - 5035
SL - 4506
So... consider a S65 took the 997 Turbo in the video posted above, I'd say the CL and SL can beat it even worse. Just going by with weight of course.

I am intrigued, so I am going to book a test drive in a Porsche Turbo, I will
post my comments sometime in about a week.
