My 63 does have bigger boots, but I am sure it's more a lack of low torque.
My 996 Turbo was hardly 4 wheel drive with only about 20% to the front!
I don't know if that's changed on the 998. The GTR has of course cutting
edge 4 wheel drive.Still I will find out on Thursday when I drive one.
The 997 Turbo can redirect as much as 100% of the power to the front or rear wheels through its electromagnetically controlled multi-plate clutch. The system is called Porsche Traction Management (PTM) and can react in less than 100 milliseconds. I am not sure what system was in the 996 Turbo, but the 997's PTM seems to be a vast improvement.

I bow to your knowledge, you obviously like to read a lot, so do I.
My 996 apart from being reasonably quick was pretty awful at everything
else. I am sure only 20% went to the front, but I am sure there will be
someone out there who will know. I am looking forward to driving a machine
with sub 8 secs to 100 and under 4 to 60, however I just want to be able
to give my impressions, I expect the ride will be far too harsh.

Actually, I just have pretty good research skills (related to my profession). I came across the 996's information after I posted. The previous viscous clutch allowed as much as 40% of the power to be transferred to the front wheels.
