Ok so are we envious?

This is THE car between the SLR and the SL.

Impressions?

I love the weight (3671 lbs), the stock horsepower (571 HP), the drivetrain layout (MCT transaxle), and the tire setup (265 front, 295 rear).

Only a fixed roof coupe, though. I'm not sure I could give up the R230 convertible. Maybe I could convince the wife we need both in the garage?

Not impressed

Lacks tq of 65
DCT could prove as buggy as MCT (ask SL63 owners how reliable is MCT)
Ground clearance may make SLS non-useable for daily urban commuting, much like 65 Blk or 997GT2, unless it has lift feature like 997GT3 v2.0, or has Scud-like decent ground clearance w/o lifts
Not clever engineering to improve handling by sacrificing daily-use ground clearance and/or using semi-slick tires that are hydroplaning-prone in CA's winter rains

Wt is in right direction but GT2 or GT3 are only ~3100lbs (though have laughable Luddite gearboxes)

I'm not sure I completely follow you, Wsh.

The 3,500 lb 911 Turbo seems a more appropriate comparison for the base SLS. An SLS Black Series--if Mercedes ever offers one--would be the car to compare to the race-ready GT2 and GT3.

More torque is always good, of course, but with its 800+ lb weight advantage, 48:52 weight balance, better gearing, and faster shifts it's very likely that an SLS will out-accelerate an SL65 in spite of the torque disadvantage.

The knock I could see against the SLS is that it's more a sports car and less a GT than the R230 and W215 cars. Of course, that's also a big part of its attraction. It looks to me like the SLS will be the closest thing to a sports car that Mercedes has sold in many decades.

Under the skin there's a ton of new technology in this car, if it all works ... it will be a fantastic piece of engineering.

The exterior seems to have the potential to finish a strong 2nd to the SLR in the ugly car contest. Time will tell.

This car looks similar to the new BMW Z4. The squarish roof contour to the tail is similar to the new BMW Z4. I think this might be wider than the BMW Z4 though.

Hard to say what the car will look like once the camo pieces come off.
That being said, the looong front nose with short rear deck does not appeal to me.
For my taste, the proportions seem off on this car.
I'll have to reserved judgement until the final car is revealed.
Until then, in spite of all the geat hardware, I am not entirely sold on it.
Which is great, considering how expenssive it will be.

I know you love your 65's but lets be clear, some people absolutely hate them since they lack every sort of driver interaction. A family member has an S63 and yes its a great car with a nice ride but what is the point? Its a big tank with a big motor. It cant go around a corner and it cant stop better than a 7 Series.

Ok that was harsh but it proves a point. I love the SLS for every reason you hate it. So Hopefully you can see I was being a bit crazy just to make my point.

But back to the SLS for a second. So it is a performance car with semi slick tires and a low body. Where is the problem? I drive cars with semi slicks all the time and even in the rain it is fine. When you buy a car like that you understand that you cant get on the freeway and go 95 in the rain. I guess we have differing opinions but I see zero problems with the SLS as far as safety goes. Its exactly what MB needs to show up the SLR with a car that will be 1/2 the cost. Finally something with character and a bit of history.

It will sell like gang busters and it will be a classic vehicle.

Something about sports cars with real performance transmissions and a motor thats not out of breath at 6k rpm make me smile. 65's make great power but I feel they are about as exciting to listen to and feel as a hoover. Again I love V8's and high revs. Torque is for stoplights but power and revs are for back roads and race tracks.

The SLS looks okay so far, but as others have mentioned, the judgment (at least on the way it looks) will have likely have to wait until the final version is fully released. As to it's performance, I think the numbers look promising. I'm not sure it'll be as quick or as fast as the SL65 Black Series, but I'm sure it'll give it a decent run.

As much as I love my AMG, I will never buy an auto-gearbox in a sportscar anymore. Porsches, Vipers and Corvettes are the proof it can be done. With a manu-transmission it could be a far bigger succes !
What are they waiting for in Affalterbach ?

Just my opinion.

I would never buy a car with an old fashioned gear box anymore....

What is Affalterbach to do now?
