Errrrrr... this is exactly how the SL55 is - a button which cycles through S (Summer), W (Winter), M (Manual) with the same information displayed. In M mode, the car is a true manual in that only the driver changes gear, it's not like a kickdown.
Does it hold the gear selected regardless of RPM? the CLK 55
would hold it from shifting up but not from shifting down. Is the SL 55 in manual a FULL manual? or will it still down shift automatically at low RPM?

Strangely, I don't know! It certainly holds on to the gear at high RPM so that it is very easy to hit the rev limiter such is the ferocious way the needle mores around the rev counter, but I have never used it in conditions where it woud havbe to change gear because of low rpm. My guess is that it will change gear, otherwise without a clutch, you run the risk of stalling or generally making a mess of things. Something to try next time I'm out.

It seem to hold the gear in the normal operating rpm range; if you redline it it'll shift and the same when going into the low rpm/idle range.
