Exclamation Twin-Turbo Gallardo's Do 1/4 mile in 9.1 sec @ 169 MPH, video

Just something random to think about: For all the money alot of people are throwing at modding AMG's and bimmers, Porsche, etc... why not just get an AWD Gallardo at a discount used, then take it to a place like Underground Racing or Heffner Performance and let them do a twin-turbo setup with it?

I mean seriously how many SL 65 black series or CL 65's, M6's, 997 tt's are you going to see that can lay down 1/4 mile times of low 9 second ranges at close to 170 MPH? And have top speeds probably over 240 MPH? I wonder how much this setup would cost? Anybody here been tempted to step from an AMG or Porsche into a twin-turbo Gallardo? Just wondering....
Supposedly they are pretty reliable with some already over 20,000 miles and still going strong... anybody here have one or know someone who does? If so are they reliable? There are twin-turbo Viper's out there that have done the 1/4 mile in 8 second ranges or even high 7's but are probably not very comfortable or luxurious at all.....

So if you guys had a choice (what a nice choice obviously) between waiting a year or 2 and getting a used SL 65 Black Series for around $200,000 and modding it.. or waiting a year or two and get a slightly used Gallardo coupe and get the twin-turbo setup ... and lets assume just for conversation they both end up totalling the same amount of money.. which would you choose? Even a modded SL BS would do the 1/4 mile in what? mid-10's? I guess nobody knows yet.... ( I suppose a modded SL 65 Black Series should put out close to 900 HP.... the twin-turbo Gallardo's from Underground Racing are putting out between 1300+ to 1500+ HP plus nice to have All Wheel Drive and weight in the mid-3000lb area? What is the weight of the SL 65 BS?)

The UndergroundRacing kit is around $35K, I think.

These guys do some top notch work! I am constently reading about them. What a killer video... I think the Gallardo kit is 50K and the Merc kit is 100k, thats installed.....Don't quote me on that.

It all really depends on how radical you want to go. I believe UGR's "base" twin kit for the Gallardo starts in the $40k's and the 1000hp kit is around $60k. Their Viper kits can get up there as well, again depending on how much power you want. These guys are in my hometown and I can remember when they were running around in a built Saleen mustang tearing everybody up (800rwhp back then). They really have worked hard over the last couple of years making a name for themselves and doing quality work. Sucks they don't work on mustangs anymore or I would have them doing my work.

You asked the question so I will answer. The two cars I was considering when I bought my 65 was the Gallardo and 997TT. The real reason I decided against the Gallardo is not because of performance - it was because of practicality. It's not always about the need for a 9 second car, and I don't think you should assume people buy an SL65 because they want it to run 9s. Getting solidly into the 10s is more than sufficient, and I have a convertible that looks awesome top up and top down, not to mention it's still relatively practical and is perfect for kicking back and just cruising. Finally, in my profession/position - it's simply not appropriate to be showing up to work in a Gallardo. I don't live in LA and while some will argue the SL still isn't exactly a Toyota Camry, trust me, it's nowhere near what the Gallardo is.

Don't get me wrong, these TT Gallardos are awesome, but truthfully the SL65 is a very different car that does things a different way.

I think projects like that are a nice engineering exercise, but are basically rediculous. Maybe I feel that way because I am not a drag racer.

To me a trip to the track needs to have right and left turns... especially in a sports car like the Gallardo. I also have a fair amount of time in both Galardo's and Murcielago's (unmodded and ones that we have modded), and putting 1000hp in that car would ruin the package. The package to me (in a sports car), is one in which all the elements work together in harmony, with no one item overwhelming the others.

I had the opportunity to instruct a couple of guys who had these seriously enhanced cars. These cars were a turbo Gallardo with 800hp and a Ford GT with over 800 hp. They had far too much power for the chassis'. spent a fair amount of time sideways (if you were any good) and would be suicide for the average enthusiast. Both of these owners were novices and just went out and spent a pile of $ to get big power, without really knowing what that meant. Both of these guys were absolutely terrified to get near the gas since they both had ended up facing the wrong way on public roads, without even trying! That doesn't sound like fun to me.

Both of these cars, unless you were very very good and had great car control have the potential to take you off into the weeds very easily.

A much better solution is to spend time learning the charcteristics of your car. Take a few driver's schools, and add modest enhancements to improve performance. The way that I work with our software writers is to enhace the driving experience, not have the engine overwhem the package and ruin the balance.

For the Gallardo.... buy an '05 for around $100K. Take a few driver's schools for $4-5K, and then maybe add an exhaust and ECU tuning... and go have some more fun!

As much fun as drag racing can be, these cars (including our AMGs), handle so well that there is even more fun to be had...

Well If i had to chose right now the price would be very different since you can get a BS for around like 280k?? and you can get a G between 85k and 90k and then add the 60k TT package and you have a TT gallardo for 150k vs 280k for the BS.

TT Gallardo is pretty badass...Jason (Hefner) is an 'ole mustang guy from up around my way...he worked on a Saleen I had back in the day and he just got a viper at that time and was tinkering...I def think his G-TT setup would be great and reliable...but we're still talking some pretty good money to get there including the cost of the base Gallardo. I love the Murci though, a lambo to me should have lambo doors and a V12...but it's hard to pass up the power of the G-TT

yes there is... when you are in 3rd gear at over 120mph, shift to 4th and floor it and the thing goes sideways and you have a diaper moment- that is too much power. tt vipers are known for that.

ugr's work is top notch. they have too their horror stories, but overall their quality is excellent.

40k 650hp 800hp
65K 800hp 1000hp
110k (includes engine build) 1200hp 1400hp+

Wow you guys get so hot round the collar about a figure!
So what 9 secs ain't going to do you any good on normal roads, except maybe loose you license. For every day use I'd rather have a SL65, more civil, with a top that goes down.

OP said it was between a SL65 BS and a TT gallardo, so the top wouldnt be able to come down

Please pay attention!!
I said SL65 because the BS has an awful ride and terrible seats, Clarkson
on top gear said he would rather have a SL500 and the change.
And of course the BS doesn't have a convertible roof.
My point was having a 9 sec quarter does nothing for everyday driving.

TT Gallardo > Sl65 BS

for me anyway...relaiable 9 sec car that you can drive everyday (if you wanted) for around the price of a used sl65BS ... with exclusivity and exotic level performance and rarity...no contest...

Your missing my point, I am saying I'd rather have a normal SL65 than
a Gallardo or a 65BS , I am sure these 2 would where you out if used for every day use, and with congested roads they can't show there pedigree.
In other words I am bringing another point into the discussion not merely
talking about the Gallardo vs the 65BS and 9 sec quarters..
