Just remove the carpet (some clips to pull)and you will be able to reach the brakelight.
I changed my third (center) brakelight from the red one to the AMG clear one.

I changed my 3rd brakelight to the SL63 smoked one, as well. It was a total pain in the *** to dig your way to the brakelight. Removal of the carpet took a little while to figure out, but I ended up not cracking or breaking clips, so I was lucky. My one point of advice in removing carpet from the bootlid is to drop the top and then put a towel over the roof in the trunk to catch screws. Reason being is that the carpet is hard to get off with the leather flaps in place with top up. Cheers
