Multifunction display too dim - '03 SL55
My multi-function display under the speedo and tach are fairly dim and are unreadable when exposed to any decent amount of sunlight. I was wondering if this is normal or if there is a way to adjust the brightness.

Yes, I find same issue on my SL55. Assumed it was just AMG design graphics. Would be nice if there was an improvement possible.

You should be able to adjust the brightness of tacho and COMAND light by turning the little reset button in between the two dials of the tacho. Let's hope it's not at its most bright already...

The background lighting will dim/brighten not the actual readout. So until they make it "Daylight Readable" we are SOL. Bright sunlight and sunglasses on, the gauges are about it.

2003 SL55 2007 S550
Just came back from a 200 mile drive this afternoon. Couldn't read the multi-function display during the entire drive. My 2003 SL55 has tinted windows and I had the sunshade closed but I couldn't see a thing. It's been this way since I bought the car 7 years ago and, as far as I can tell, I have a lot of company with anyone who has a 2003 or 2004 SL55.
I really want to fix this. Haven't found a way yet. I've spoken to dealers and independent mechanics. One mechanic contacted a display refurbishing place in Florida but they didn't have a solution.
Do any 2003 SL55's exist that have a readable multi-function display in sunlight?
As a group, should we attempt to pressure Mercedes on this?
I love this car. But it drives me nuts that a vehicle that was $135K new can't show basic things like the mileage or what gear is selected when the sun is out.

I posted earlier, as I have same problem on my 2003 SL55.
Since that previous post, I seem to remember reading somewhere (on one of the forums), that was a "display issue" on the earlier models, and cannot be fixed.
I believe, the only solution, is to replace full (speedo/tach) units with new ones from later year models.
Please let us know if anyone can verify this, or if there is another fix.
Currently, I just live without being able to read in sunlight. You get used to it!

I would be willing to replace the unit with one from a newer model, but I don't know if that is possible (without a lot of custom interface work) because the bus changed.
If it is possible I'm very interested in details, cost, etc.
