My SL55 finally breaks the 12 second ¼

It’s Wednesday night in Indiana and it is a fine evening for some drag racing. There aren’t too many days left in the season, especially not like this so I head up to the track at Muncie.

When I arrive, it’s 59 degrees and dry for Indiana. The DA is 1114. The track is nicely prepped. My first run is a disappointing 12.33 with a 60’ of 2.147. I pulled an R/T of .029 out my ***, but who cares; I need a 60’ below 2 seconds. I pull back in to the staging lanes and wait. It seems everyone in central Indiana had the same idea as I.

Two hours later, the track is cool because they had been picking up the remnants of a Camaro Z28’s rear end for the last hour. I’m finally rolling up for run number two. I decide to go through the water and roast my tires a bit for some heat. I normally go around the water and just spin the debris off my T1Rs. During the wait, I had decided to drop my rear tires to 25 PSI. Once staged, I dialed up about 900 RPMs. When the lights drop, I let off the brake and dial on the power taking maybe a second to WOT. I hear three short chirps from the tires. The results are that my SL managed an 11.86 ¼ @ 121.31 and a 60’ of 1.767. I finally broke into the high 11s and I was thinking about that Camaro so it was time to go home.

I'm guessing cooler and dryer air creates negative DA which means more air more fuel more boom more speed?

Yep. That's it exactly.

My fastest runs have all been on negative air density days.

Question,

I ran 12.4 @ 113 in in 85 degree hot humid air with a da of 2500 last night.

My car is 100% stock. I rip off 1.8 60 foots on almost every launch. I too have T1R's. I keep my car on the lowest suspension setting BTW.

Will my car be into the 11's with just a tune and pulley?

Tough question, hopefully the folks that really know will chime in, but here is my two cents worth: Could a pulley and tune, a low DA and a 1.7 60 foot time shave 4.1 tenths? I think yes. Living in South Florida, you should consider some sort of IC pump upgrade though.

By the way, have you ever tried the highest suspension setting and turning off ABC sport? I do this thinking more weight just might shift back onto the rear wheels to provide a bit more traction.

I tried the CM30 pump and it hurt my times. I went back to a brand new OEM MB pump and my times and MPH are MUCH better now.

I did try putting the suspension all the way up. I had axle hop off the line and I think the extra wind resistance hurt my times.

I tried dyno mod. Didn't matter. I tried running the heat before the run. didn't matter.

Actually my car runs best when it's hot. I need a scanner to see my IAT's to confirm all this.

Most of us fight heat or heat soak especially with our SCs. That’s why we run extra heat exchangers, bigger or better IC pumps and phenolic spacers to isolate engine heat.

Your on my friend

We need to get some representation (German Muscle) at one of our local tracks. I was all by myself at Muncie last Wednesday in a sea of American iron. At ORP (Indianapolis) this summer, there was me and a guy with a BMW Z4. We ran head to head. I think he thought he was going to run with my SL and after pulling a 14.2 against my 12.1, he said he was going to sell his car if it is that slow. The poor guy had no idea what he was running against and that is the point. We need some Cs Es and SLs to show up at the track for a change. Maybe we can get some of the folks from last summer’s awesome meet.

Yeah I'm with you...

As soon as I get out of school and start reversing these cash flows, you can count on me being your dedicated wing man (I'll be goose, you be maverick)

Time will tell if you and I will be able to get the other clowns together - got no bite on the Fall Meet....

What are your plans for turkey day? Staying in the area?
