09 Mercedes SL 63AMG and 98 TT Corvette (702/775 @ rear wheels)
As another of the five, I find the above worthy comments all, especially that of "why did I buy this car?" I have a forged motor/hardened drivetrain Twin Turbo Corvette in the garage alongside the AMG, two totally different cars, different purposes. IMHO, I am leaving mine as I bought it for all the reasons I know only too well. Good thread and mix of opinions though.

SL63
my other toy is a f430 spider. i love the alto, high pitched whine in the f-car.
the rumble in my sl63 is a great counter-baritone!
the only vehicle that i think needs an exhaust note overhaul is the 911 turbo. great car, but no sound!!

Personally I am on the fence about it, I mean really if I wanted a Viper I would have bought a viper. It has kind of lost its refinement. I was next to a Porsche C4S and I gunned it, woke him up and he gave chase, so it has more sports cache, but is that what I bought THIS car for?

Please post your followup thoughts/vids. I totally agree with you about "is that what I bought THIS car for" and would be very interested in your thoughts.

F-cars are a lot of fun.

I had a level II upgrade done on my 997TT with new cats and Fabspeed exhaust which helped but it will never sound like an F-car.

On Friday after work I went back and had them re-install the resonators. The sound really didnt fit the image of the car, the only thing missing was the stickers on the front fender. I prefer the factory pur, to the dump truck growl. Even the guy at the muffler shop said he knew I would be back, LOL. Only winner here was him, he got $280 for it..

I cant for the life of me figure out how to get the video from my phone on here. But i'll work on it.

Take from me, dont do it. The factory got it right on this one.

thanks for the F/U. Always hard to tell from vids, but I think I agree with you. Sounds like an SLS. What the SL63 needs is a bypass switch to make it louder when you want, but quieter for "regular" driving. Like a Capristo exhaust system or in the Maserati.

Thanks again. That was very helpful. I oew you a drink.

SL63 Growl

Hi Gents, I guess I"m the 6th SL63 owner, but maybe I dont count as I'm in Manila, Philippines.

I just got my 1 year old SL63 recently from our Grey Market (Used Car dealers other than the authorized inporter/distributor) and I enjoy it. Recently I took the top down and went out for a tear-it-up trek on our highways. Previous trips were sedate with the wifey with the windows closed and the aircon on.

Jeez! I didnt know it sounded so LOUD! I'm already 60 years old and still enjoying my other cars (one of them a Carrera S PDK), but whooa...this one is LOUD.

Sorry to sound square, but while others are talking about opening up their exhausts some more, can I ask if it's OK to change my rear mufflers to a lesser LOUD sound? Does anyone have any suggestions? I can handle a little growl and snarl now and then, but hey, at 2-3T RPM, I can already hear the whole pride roar! All 530 of them! :-)

Any reply will be greatly appreciated. If you can suggest a good muffler supplier, I'd appreciate that too. Thanks guys.

Angry

Guys, what does it mean if my exhaust backfires once in awhile? Is it time to change my mufflers? Some gaskets are leaking maybe? There's 30T miles on my SL63. After I rev it when standing still, it backfires with one or 2 pops.

Hahaha...thanks Photonut. I guess you're right. I'll try to enjoy it as you said.

By the way, would you know how long our mufflers should last? Maybe 30T miles has made it sound even louder than normal? I dont really know what normal is as I've only had the car for a month and it already had 30T miles.

Frankly, I'd rather have the European alto sound like your F430 than the SL 63/American muscle sound, as you said is a nice baritone. Is there anyway I can get this alto sound for my SL?

Thanks for your reply.

the ferrari exhaust sound has a higher tone, in part due to the design and unique firing order of the pistons.
it will be impossible to duplicate on a mb, regardless of what exhaust system you use.
the exhaust system should last for at least 10 years in your car, as it is made of stainless steel.

Thanks Photonut. You make a lot of sense. I guess I'm stuck with enjoying the exhaust symphony, as you said. You were a big help. Thanks again.
