SL55/63/65/R230 AMG: Blinker issue

Blinker issue
One of the nice things about my 03 SL55 is waking up each morning and wondering if there will be some new, exciting little issue to deal with. So far, they have all been managable. Here's the latest.
The blinkers will occasionally just start blinking....as you're driving down the road, without hitting the blinker lever. If you move the lever it might change the blinking to the opposite side, but it doesn't shut off when centered. Fuss with it a few times and eventually it will cancel. completely unpredictable and random.
The switch does not seem loose or in any obvious need of repair. Isn't affected by hi/low beam or wiper engagement.
I haven't even thought about disassembling the column but I guess if I had to...
I'd certainly like any other suggestions if anyone has any....like maybe some super secret 'blinker thinker' circuit that needs fixing or replacing.
