Brake dust is killing my wheels!!!
Any ideas on keeping the down the brake dust on my wheels? I've heard of dust shields and special coating on wheels but do any of them work well? I've got a 2005 SL65 with RennTech wheels and after 3 days the brake dust is right back!!! Appreciate any helpful hints!!!

I'm trying spray-on brake dust inhibitor from Armor All with some success. I've noticed not as much brake dust as before and what does remain seems to wipe-off easier. My biggest concern was would the spray stain or discolor the rims. So far it hasn't and its been two weeks.
I've also used shields i.e. inserts (they do work) on my BMW M-cars but they hide your calipers and seem to increase the pad/caliper heat due to decreased/restricted air flow which reduces stopping power. So, brake dust inhibitor maybe (it's a cheap fix), shields no.

I solved the problem with all my MBs by using much harder brake pads. You'll be warned that they may squeak, but its never been a problem for me. Right now, I have harder pads on my E420 and SL55 and thev wheels will look clean for a couple of weeks of daily driving.

using a low dust pad like akebono mentioned here seems to work well for some. other than that if you stay on top of the wheels maybe clean them every copule of weeks you should be fine. THere are some sealents that work also, like Rejex comes to mind...
Polished bare aluminum wheels are the hardest to keep clean for sure!

About 2 years ago my daughter had an m3 bmw. The wheels would accumulate brake dust in 20 miles of driving. I put akebonos on it and after 2 weeks the wheels still looked good. The sprays and wheel sealants only prolong the agony. I would like to note that there was no squeal with those pads.TE]

Just to share a tip on keeping alloy wheels clean and free of brake dust; I purchased an electric high pressure washer for about $200. It puts out less than 1800 psi and is a breeze to point and shoot with plain water to clean the wheels once a week when doing the car wash. The high pressure gets in all the nooks and crannies including the brake caliper where brushes don't go. I even have done it between car washes just to keep the wheel super shinney.
Every once in a while I give them a good scrubing with car shampoo and and a brush.
Just my $ .02
The inexpensive hi pressure washer is a must for alloy wheels.

Don't be lazy, 5 minutes with a sponge and soapy water, once a week and
dried with paper roll. It's an everyday problem for us all, so you'll have to get use to it.
