Modified Porsche 996tt vs Sl55

Well I had my 04 sl55 for a week now coming from a 996tt, two very different cars. As far as raw power and handeling, hands down the turbo. The Sl just feels alot heavier around the corners but the ride is so much more smoother than the kidney jarring Porsche. The Interior appointments and comforts goes to the Sl. Luxury all the way and makes the wife happy which in turn makes me happy. But I sure dont like the way the floormats keep slideing and not being able to be anchord? When it comes to curb appeal, then again two different crowds. The Porsche seems to get alot of oowes, aawes and stop light challenges from younger to mid age crowds while the sl is more appreciated by the older professional groups. The realiability factor I can't comment on yet, but if it is as realiable as my Porsche was I know I will be happy. Considering my age now (50) I think I made the right choice to move on to the Sl. The one thing I dont understand is that my Insurance went up higher with the Sl by a few hundred dollars a year.

Weird....my sl has floor mat anchors....

I don't know if your TT was modified, but a stock SL55 is a little but faster than a stock TT (non X50) in the 1/4 mile.

The turbo lag that accompanies every 996TT is what kept me from buying one.

Since we're on the subject, I'm looking at a 1-owner, Porsche maintained, no warranty 2001 996TT with 64K on the speedo. The price is $37K, is that good?

Make sure you get your 996TT checked out before you buy. Try to buy it from a private seller that has ALL the records and has don't ALL the maintenance. If they don't have maintenance records I would walk.

I pulled this from another forum below:

- coolant hoses start popping off @ 60k miles (there are 8 to replace i think - drop the engine)
- coolant tank heats & cracks after 30k miles
- front wheel bearings
- 2nd-gear pop-out issue
- get a boost check
- engines are not bullet-proof - check the ECU screws to make sure they were never removed
- get computer tested for type 2 revs
- and probably a lot more i've forgot

Thank you! This info really helps. I may pass and go for the 07 BMW Alpina B7 I drove this weekend. If you haven't driven one you owe it to yourself.

Yes the Porsche had about 650 hp crank by the time I finished with it, Im going to have to go to the mb dealer to see about the floormat setup. It's driving me nuts.

I own an evo gt750 (996tt with 750hp) with lots of nice track upgrades. I also have an SL600.

For me, there is ONLY one reason I would own a 996 and thats for track days, otherwise I would never take one over an SL55/600/65.

My sl55 also has floormat anchors and with rubber all weather mats (or event the factory ones, they don't move around doesn't seem...

About the 996/997tt - both are excellent, and on a track they are brilliant cars (however I love the GT3RS or GT2 on circuit much more than the heavier turbo awd varients) ...I would get one just as a fast toy that I can drive on the street and take to the track on weekends I didn't (or couldn't) tow my race car out there, if the price is right and the mods are right then it would be a super fun car indeed... I've always loved the 911 TT - just something special about that car - but it's not the grand tourer like the SL, which is the perfect boulevard cruiser and top down roadster with gobs of power and torques.

I agree with everything that's been posted so far and I concur with the comments regarding the current political and socio-economic conditions in the USA. Perhaps if I drove my SL more than once or twice a month I would change my mind and keep it. But sadly I can't/don't and it just "sits" so its time to move on perhaps to the 07 BMW Alpina B7 I test drove this weekend. Unlike a lot of owners I don't get emotionally or physically attached to my cars which can be a financial curse, just ask my wife!

The 996 turbo had the WORST ride I have ever experienced, I tried 3 different
tyres, loads of different pressures, but in the end after 4 months it crippled
me. It got lots of looks and I loved the way it drew attention. I part exchanged it for an SL55, superbly comfortable, and a convertible, not as fast
as the Porsche though, now gone replaced by a SL63 which beats both.

996 TT or 997 TT is not super harsh stock, sporty yes but still well enough to drive every day for sure...it's a sports car, it's supposed to be nice and tight and link the driver with the road but niether car does it in a bone jarring way by anymean...as for power stock comparisons done by reputable auto mags over the years... 997TT>SL55>996TT>SL63
