SL55/63/65/R230 AMG: What did you cut off on your OEM SL55 Exhaust for better sound? Diagram Inside

First I had cut 158, not enough... then the 159 and then I was able to tell a difference- sounds great, no drone and no check engine light unless you mess around with the cats

I absolutely love the sound of the stock 63 engine, and is exactly what I would like my SL55 to sound like. Can anyone compare the sound of cutting off 158 and 159 compared to a stock 63 engine?
And when you guys say you remove these pieces, do you have to replace it with something?

I removed the secondary cats (#158) and welded in a piece of 3" stainless steel "U" bend. If you look at the diagram carefully, you can see how the "U" bend can be cut nearly in half (slightly off center) to link in where the secondaries were. I had a local muffler shop do it for me. No CELs with the secondaries removed.
By the way, nothing you do to the 55k exhaust system will make it sound like an NA 6.3 motor IMHO.

I'll bet that 430 sounded angry!!!

No... I went with EvoSport shorty ceramic coated back when there weren't tons of good LTH around and they had to be fitted, cut, welded and maybe CEL issues so on and so forth. The shortys bolted on and work good, but if I had it to do over again, LTH would have been the way to go.

2005 SL55 AMG
Just finishing up.
Bruce at TTM had done work on another SL55 which I heard and it sounded AWESOME! He is finishing mine up tomorrow. He suggested headers which includes removing the primary cats (157), stepped up the pipe to 3" into an X pipe (which replaces b) , removed the secondary cats (158) and ran the 3" pipe to the resonators (159). Decided to keep the resonators to elliminate any droning. The system sounds fantastic when you get on it and just right when your taking the wife to dinner. If you can get to see Bruce, I highly recommend it, great job and the welding is second to none. I'm sure he is going to get some pictures up on the thread.

Bye Bye 158's....
I just had my 158's removed yesterday and replaced with straight pipes, honestly I felt bad cutting out an AMG part but with the removal of those secodary cats it gave the car a deeper growl on WOT. As for start up, idiling and cruising there is no major difference unless you really know the sound of the car and pay close attetion. So far I am very pleased with the sound but did not feel any performance gain or loss as of yet....

Has anyone been brave enough to cut off 158, 159 AND 160?
What about 159 and 160?
I really like the stock SL55 tone as it is...but seeing this video makes me think about exhaust mods:

By the way, the link is of my SL. The sound is the result of shorty headers (evoSport) and a secondary kitty delete (158). I think the SC whine is thanks to the 180 counter pulley.

It just sounds so mean with that deep growl. Can't wait to get the secondary cats removed from mine. Any more videos to share?
