What did you cut off on your OEM SL55 Exhaust for better sound? Diagram Inside
Ok guys, I've been doing a lot of reading, and cant put a picture on what some people change out on their OEM exhuasts. Obviously I want something that wont give me a Check Engine light. I replaced #159 with SS 3.5inch pipe. What else are you guys doing?

The car came as a single exhaust. I deleted the 2nd cats/resonator and put a Magnaflow X-pipe in their place. Then ran the 2.5" SS pipes to dual Magnaflow mufflers. I had to change the sway bar and spare tire well to be able to make it dual.

Kamil, Dont do it. I had mine done last thursday, and had them put back on by friday. It totally takes away from the class of the car, and adds no performance (in fact robs low end hp). I would save my money for HP upgrades.

I have 159s removed, it does not sound much louder at all, and sounds as stock on lower RPMs. Still sounds classy enough for our cars. I was just wondering how it sounds with more stuff cut out. I like the way mine is alrady and think will stick to it.

Maybe you had the mufflers removed... IDK, but I actually had my secondary cats removed 1st and it just deepened the tone of the exhaust... Then I removed the resonators and it made it much louder... The car sounds as it should've from the factory... It is quiet at cruise and idle, but comes alive with my right foot... It is still very classy my friend...

I think the difference is mine is a SL 63, and you guy have the SL 55. On the SL 63 its sounded like a dump truck. I think the factory sound on the 55 was pretty toned down, but the sound of the SL 63 is perfect stock.

You should considered removing item 158, the secondary cats. I bought a piece of three inch stainless steel “U” bend and took it to a muffler shop. They cut out the secondaries and then cut the “U” bend in half and welded them in where the secondaries were. If you look at the diagram carefully, you can see how the “U” bend can be cut off center to make two pieces that nearly fit in place of the secondary cats perfectly. A good welder does the rest.
Here is a vid of my SL with shorty headers and secondary cat delete. The sound is really much louder in person, but not even close to obnoxious. My cheap little flip just couldn’t handle the sound very well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xi5oI-qNApM&feature=related

By the way, our blown 55ks don’t like a lot of back pressure so relieving a little won’t hurt it a bit, in fact many say there is a small gain to be had. The NA 63 is another matter I think.
Oh, and no SELs with this mod

I know there are a few companies that have taken our stock mufflers and tweaked the baffles inside to get better sound. I talked to Simon at Evosport about it a few years ago, but never did it.

I don't even want to guess since I could be so damn far off. I did shoot Simon @ Evosport an email and will let you know when he responds.
It could turn out to be a nice mode for you and the timing is right if your SL is having a winter slumber like mine is. You could send the mufflers to Evosport and have them back and installed ready for spring.
