2002 S430, 2001 ML 55, SL 55 on order
a week later

after having my sl55 for about a week now i can say that it is the best car i have owned or driven. having been in the high end car business for 15 years i have driven most of the nice cars out there. every time i get in this sl55 i like it more. the power is awesome and it handles very well for the type of touring car that it is. if i had to pick anything to pick on it would be the feel of the brakes. i still havent go used to them completely as the feel sort of spongy to me. the sound and the endless power make up for any downfalls. loving every moment.

on another note i took the car to get a boomerang installed today and there was a black on black sl55 with florida plates at the garage with 20" wheels. it didnt look like any modifications were done to the car and there was plenty of clearance it seemed. it looked pretty good except that i dont like aftermarket mags and would much rather have the 19" AMG mags.

a boomerang is a tracking device which the insurance companies here in canada insist is installed on most higher end cars.

SL55 AMG
The feel of the brakes is of course completely artificial, being provided by a couple of springs and a rubber bung to provide a familiar feel - rapidly increasing resistance to pedal travel but it's really the amount the pedal is pressed and how fast which drives the braking. If they feel spongey, it's because Mercedes have not successfully tailored the feel to your tastes.

There's no question the slowing power is awesome as I found yesterday when a white van pulled out to overtake in front of me without looking; the rate at which the 50+ mph difference was removed was startling. No drama, just amazing performance from those huge rotors on the front wheels.
