Thinking of selling my 04 SL55... should i take the 30?

I am thinking i have too many cars and am selling my sl55.

It's an 04, black, loaded, glass roof, 46k miles and clean as a whistle.

Mercedes locally offered me 30k for it.

Anyone think I should jump on that? Or attempt to sell it private for more. I wonder if it could fetch more....

You might get a little more if you sell PP, but that could take a while, it's slow selling stuff. Sounds like the dealer is offering a decent price for a quick easy cash sale. It took me 4 months to sell my last car & that went to a PP for about $5,000 less than it was worth.

You could send it to Manheim or Adesa and get $34-36k from it. If you're desperate to sell, $30k is not a terrible price (actually, it is IMO) but PP you may be able to fetch anywere from $36-40k depending on how long you want to wait.

If you have auction access, that's a good route to go if PP isn't something you'd wish to deal with.

Do you have a warranty on your vehicle by the way?

Warranty is always a huge selling point.

New tires and the service A may be a deterrent to some individuals, it may not.

If....

it needs tires ($1000-1500) and a service (300-800), then I don't think she does 34 in the chute. Yes, I know cars are really high, but not these. They are much tougher to sell than it appears. There are dozens of them on Ebay and Autotrader that have been for sale for months with no action. Terrific car for the $$, but has to be the right guy. Also, which black? If it's 040, better. Obsidian, way worse. Warranty certainly helps, if it's transferable (not MB CPO), and the company is still around paying claims. Good luck in your trek.

Houston Texas.

There are 4 on ebay within 300 miles of here and all of them are buy it now around 38k and a couple have bids over 30k without the reserve met.

I wonder what would happen if I just started the auction at 30k with no reserve! If i get 30, well i get 30, but if i get 32... that's 2 grand

May be....

and you are right, 2 grand is 2 grand. But--if I am not mistaken, each of those cars have been listed on ebay for 3 to four attempts with no success. The really expensive one with a 38ish buy it now (silver with the 19" AMG wheels) has been on ebay now for nearly 2 months. It has also been on OVE (the Mannheim dealer site) for nearly 2 months, with a starting bid at $33.6, and a buy it now of 37ish, and has 0 bids on that site. I know, I have been watching it closely and tried to buy it for a reasonable number on ebay.
Yes, you have to try. I just think that the days of trying to start one with a big number, hopeful of some offer, are gone. Folks just won't call, and if you lose them at the beginning, it's hard to get them back later. Only my .02 which is all it's worth... good luck.

Yeah agreed. As far as I can tell on ebay, there are only two sl55's (within 200 miles of here) and both are silver cars.

I notice one has bids up to 32k almost. I figure it's worth 7 days to find out. The Merc bid should still be good in 7 days.

I'm a little ....

behind on chasing them, I'm out of town. But you are right, your down side is very low. I'd just make sure what the terms of the MB offer are, and what you can rely on. Make sure you fully disclose, it's absolutely the right thing to do.

agreed. If the dealer would just go 31 I would take it.

Save the hassle and plus, when I bought the car, I bought it for a steal! about 15k under what they were selling for a few years back. My loan was bad *** too, so I'm really ahead. I owe a little left on the car but far less than 31k.

Its pretty sad that we are debating $30K on a supposed limited production car that cost $130K+

I bought mine new, and it will be the last new Merc I buy. I love the car, but this is depressing. I will probably never sell mine, as it's just too good of a car, and for $30K, it would be silly.

Yep I totally understand. I bought mine for 50, so if I sell for 31 then basically ive rented the car for 20k over 3 years. Personally I think the care is worth more like 46 to 50. Check the used mercedes websites.. that's what they are selling them for. But ya know, things are as they are so I try not to make these things into a problem. I just accept and keep moving.

I think its called supply and demand. Before getting the SL55, I came from the Ferrari world where 'limited production' means what it says. They sold me on the 55 as a 'limited production' special. I didn't know that to Merc limited production meant limited to as many as they can pump out!

It is very 'alive'! The car is such a roller skate. It's too much fun.

Don't forget that ebay and Manheim are going to want their cut. So you are going to have to sell it for $1-2K more than your best cash offer.

You also said there is still an outstanding balance on the loan. You need to get that taken care of first. Not many buyers are going to be interested in the car unless you have 'title in hand'.

wrong. no title in hand is not a problem. two checks are cut- one for the bank with instructions to mail title to new owner and the second one to the owner for the difference between payoff and sale price (if any). this is very common.

on the subject. take the 30 and walk away. not a great deal, but not a rip-off either.

I agree keep her if you can....the SL55 is surely going to become a classic... and why sell a car this good for $30K ...it's most likely the las MB I will want to own and keep...timeless disign and grand touring perfermance. Coupe and drop top all in one, with gobs of power/tq...what's not to love!

^^ man that's a travesty for a car that once sold for $140K a few short years back...

with the cars depreciating as much as they have it makes no sense to even sell them!
