Another New SL65 Owner

I apologize if any of this is a duplication of information requested or posted by others. I have been lurking for a week or more trying to gather as much information as possible before posting. I should be picking up my 2008 SL65 saturday after 2 weeks of BS at the dealership. I had to trade in my SLK55 to make this happen. Anyway, after searching and emailing the guys at RENNtech I am not so sure how far I want to go with mods. I just paid big bucks to get the warranty extended to 2015 but have found out that many dealers like to void warranties if you have modded the car. Some of this info has come direct from RENNtech just before I planned to go forward with a stage 3 mod. Has anyone else gone through this and what has been your experience. I would think a complete intercooler KIT upgrade would be a plus, but even that could void a warranty. Seems like crap to me.

It's finally mine. These pictures also posted in the picture thread. Original AMG Anthrocite 2 piece wheels and AMG Chrome wheels pictured that I picked up during the 2+ week for delivery of the car. I swore I wouldn't change this car from stock but I am already haunted by Mod-itis. RENNtech? Savini Wheels? Is this a dream or a nightmare? :-)

congratulations on such a beautiful vehicle. maybe its just my opinion but i feel like for the price of Savini wheels you could have a nicer looking wheel with so many options out there. the two oem models you have look great but i would also look into mods if i had a beast like this. maybe you can speak with the shop manager at your local dealer and see what they do regarding modified vehicles.

There are a couple of flash tuners out there that can swap tunes back and forth to stock and modified. Not much you can do to hide a bigger intercooler. Bear in mind that they cannot deny warranty due to a modified or changed part that has nothing to do with the problem. If you went with a Renntech package they cannot deny you service on the air conditioning or ABC system (but they may balk at a lowering module). And for the record, it's a dream and not a nightmare

I had '06 SL65 bought new from a dealer that also (before delivery) installed Kleemann ECU,Tranny upgrade,LSD and exhaust (top package at the time).
All was fine with the warranty until the car developed a rocking motion (rear end when accelerating) to the point of losing control completely.
The new service mgr called MB for assistance, their tech found the mods, washed his hands of the problem and slapped Status 8 on my car (void warranty).
Be carefull.....

Thanks for that information. This is the kind of story that makes me very cautious about moving forward with mods; and if I understand correctly, your mods were performed by the dealer before you took delivery? There are many I would like to move forward with, but if a mod can void any part of a $5K extended warranty on a $100K car, the damage could potentially be more than I can recover from. Wheels seem to be the only safe bet.

Thanks for the comment on the wheels. Car is "Steel Gray". In my opinion the stock wheels are more "new school" and the chrome are more "old school". I thought I would really like the chrome but now that they are on the car I am not so sure. I guess I had fond memories of growing up with all those 70's muscle cars with chrome Cragers.

Welcome to the forum. I have not seen any pics yet, but I bet she is beautiful.

As far as mods go, hopefully the V12 guys will jump in, but my understanding is a tune and minor exhaust mods will result in nice gains. There are lots of good modules that allow you to flash back and forth from stock to modded tunes on the fly as mentioned before. I have heard good things about the Renntech RAT.

I would think the dealer would have trouble denying warranty coverage on a car with a stock tune (as far as they know) and a few minor exhaust mods.

Congrats, the 6.0TT is an amazing powerplant. I also bought the extended warranty at purchase and am remaining stock as 604/737 is plenty for me in a GT. Any attention goes on the road course mobile.

Just went in to my dealer today to see how they felt about the REENtech information I dropped off last week. Their answer was, at this time if we find any mods of this nature on the car your extended warranty will be voided. But we may change that position in the future if demand for the products change. Mine will probably stay stock until the warranty runs out!
