SL65 Spare

Hi Guys,

I have a 1year old colapsable spare for an SL65. My 06 did not come with one so I bought 1. Part number 230-400-17-02. It is an AMG part and will clear the brakes. Apparently in Europe it came with this spare. Never used. Will sell for 400.

I'd pick this up in a heartbeat if MB had actually designed the trunk large enough to carry one of the car's own tires!

Blowout

Two weeks ago I blew out my front right tire (2005 SL55) doing 160km. Pulled out the spare and was unable to inflate due to the tire bead separated from the rim. Called my mechanic buddy to pick me up and went to his shop to inflate. We were able to get the bead to seat, but tire would not take proper shape during inflation. We deflated/inflated, and made several attempts, still the tire would not take a proper form. Since my car was on the side of the road on the jack and lt was 10km's from home I said screw it, i'll drive on it very slowly and nurse my baby home. These spare tires are scary, i believe from sitting in the trunk for 6 years may have been the problem. My advice to anyone that has one, pull it out a couple times a year, inflate to insure it will take proper form, if it doesn't take form, get another one. Not much choice for a spare in these cars. I just barely got the blown out tire in the trunk, Tight fit!

I'm confused. Did you find a way to fit a full size wheel with a full size tire (lets assume front one - that's 26" in diameter and 10" width) in SL's trunk? If so with the roof up, I assume, not down?

The collapsable spare will fit. With the top up you can probably stuff a full size tire in enough to leave it somewhere safe and go back and get it. It's just another option. You can always use the sealent for have it towed.

I used the space saver spare on my 911 once and left the tire and wheel at a gas station and went and picked it up later. It was late at night and my daughter was with me.
