Cold intake on SL55

How do cold intake air pipes compare to getting air fed through a hood scoop?

the answer is where it goes after it inters the intake
hoodscoop : air inters through the hood then into a air box then through the filter then to the engine if there are small bends and the filters flow high and no interference then your good,,,example: the stock sl55 intake has lots of of interference and flows 515 cfm,
smooth tube w/free flowing filters like the needswings intake flows 700 cfm
200 cfm = an increase of about 2 lbs of boost and 3 to 5 tenths in the 1/4 mile.if you can get your IAT's no more than 10 to 15 degrees above ampient temp. you good,,as for mine they are 5 to 9 degrees above ampient,, as for filters (cone or any type if it is under the hood pulling hot air , your IAT are very high and you loose power not gain. jim

For the first time someone with sense! what a great idea to extend
the air intake right up front where the cool air is, rather that putting K&N
cones under the bonnet/hood where the hot air is. Great stuff

Should be noted this isn't an SL55, but an SL55k ENGINE SWAPPED into a CROSSFIRE, notice the different Headlights etc in pictures, this CAI (at least where the cold air ducting fits thru the Radiator support housing, & the ABC suspension will alter the FIT greatly on an actual SL55)

The CROSSFIRE is vastly different (It doesn't share the Hydraulic Suspension "ABC" found on SL55/65/600/63 models, & takes up a lot of space needed to fit the NeedsWings CAI) Also it's a completely different car in terms of Hood, Under Hood, Grill, tollerences as the CROSSFIRE's Engine bay is made for a NON-Supercharged 5.4 liter motor vs Supercharged SL55 etc)

The air holes are very small in diameter due to Cooling/Plumbing hoses running thru air intake holes @ least on the SL65/600/55 models I've seen in person. & very difficult to run CAI up to MB grill as holes get very small IE less than 2" on Drivers side etc.

Still much different on SL model R230, guess you need to see 1 in person to realize the vast differences in lay out, NOT saying it wont fit, BUT just like in my initial post "The FIT will alter greatly" & the actual air hole differences between E55 to SL55 etc are still vastly different

From looking @ NeedsWings website, it shows only the front part of CAI, & not the Radiator run-thru scoop part? It appears to utilize old OEM factory ducting to just route to original openings, not showing the larger run-thru air scoops mated to outside Radiator. (maybe just not pictured?) As well the CFM is lowered on E55k model to
This kit is capable of flowing 684cfm, whereas the factory intake peaks at 515cfm.*
1995E320CAB: my new CAI, is finished piping goes to nearly 4" it outperforms OEM 600/65 in every way.. Don't wanna thread-Jack
