If I take the car to a MB Stealer will they be able to tell me or will they just laugh and say it is aftermarket and good luck finding out what they are for or how they work?

They might not laugh (at least not until you are gone) but I doubt they would want to mess with it. Take the car to a high-end car audio installation shop.

My guess is that the microphone and what was on top of the dash connect to the iPhone in the glovebox to make a hands free phone. Pehaps all that needs to be done is to fish the wires out. Or maybe there's another electronic box hidden under the dash. Or maybe its been spliced into the OEM Command. Only way to find out is to start taking things apart. Or if you are lucky the guy at the audio shop might recognize it and show you how use it.

If you're near southern NJ (Pennsauken), I have an electronics/car stereo wiz that can figure it all out for you.

Email me at brucem105@comcast.net

Thank you for the offer Bruce.

I am just outside Pottstown PA so it is a bit far to Southern NJ. I do have a 12V shop at the company I work for so I will chat with the head tech that did work on my 3000GT Spyder and see if he has ever worked on MB.

I would like to be able to playback an iPod at the very least, or even better, get a bluetooth adapter to plug into the iPod port so I can stream from any smart device. Steering wheel control would be a plus.... will have to see what he says I guess and take it from there. Looks like it is a bit of a job to pull out the head unit on these cars.... more then I would feel comfortable with anyway...

Question A couple more operation questions...

On the built in navigation.... it does not let me enter in a street number??? Is this correct? Is there an upgrade to the nav that will?

Also I turned on some of the built in Comand options... like the exit lighting that turns on some exterior lights... I like the lights that light up when I get out of the car!!! It lights up the fog lights and what looks to be a small bulb in the head lights?? How do we get it to use these lights as the day time running lights???? Perhaps a module we can install to make it do this??

Still have not figured out the Apple connector in the glovebox but my 12 volt guy said he would look at it for me when he gets a chance..... :-(

Hi DigitalKnight, I just noticed your pic. today. Actually I've seen this before, because I bought one for my Mom's truck. It's actually an aftermarket hands free cell phone kit.

Any chance you could provide the manufacture of the unit so I can try and find a webite and manuals?

Thx,

-Mark

I am already scrapping that stock head unit. Cannot believe they put that garbage in this car. My car goes in the shop next Monday for the install. Just not worth playing with the stock system in these cars in my opinion. least intuitive nav I have ever seen, BT is a pain to pair, and the stereo sound is just ok at best.

+1...main reason I hated COMAND was the archaic navigation...the Garmin in the Kenwood is so simple stupid to use. The audio when the top is up is ok...when the top down was down very disappointing.
