SL55 valve ticking noise??

I am looking at a very clean 2003 SL55AMG with 25k miles. It has a full MB service history. There is a ticking sound from the top of the right hand side of the engine (RHS when standing in front of the car). Is this normal? What is it likely to be.
Many thanks for any advice!

those motors are noisy and always sound busy at idle.

it is hard to tell without hearing it 1st hand, but i would say that the car has sat a while and was not driven much so it might have some carbon deposits which are easily treatable with some techron and spirited driving

Techron is a good additive.

I'd also check the oil and filter service history. Using a fleece filter and the 0-40 Mobil 1 can work wonders with engine noise, hence friction.

If the oil was filled from the bottom I'd check to make sure the copper ring was always replaced because some tech say it not only prevents leaks but helps with the lube package. Most dealers use 5-40, no biggie, they just get it in bulk so it is cheaper and more convenient.

0-40 is just better.

huh? what do you mean the copper washer helps with the "lube package"?

and since 2007 5w40 esp mobil 1 supersedes the 0w40 and is recommended for all mercedes vehicles requiring 0w40

Here we go again.

Talk to Glyn abut oils and fluids various, please, he is the expert. I refer you to his threads.

There is a diesel oil for the 229.51 spec that is 5-40 M1; I recall the gas 5-40 M1 is recommended for certain engines only. AMGs with the 113K or the 12V engine, as a rule, use 0-40, thank you. I also use it in my G500 per my tech's recommendation. Try it you'll like it.

As far as the copper washer goes I am referring to information from the MCBA tech advisors. Glyn may have another informed opinion.

Could you post the 2007 MB communication?

Thanks alx and grane

Is there anyway I can easily check that its just carbon build up? Its a really clean car and I'd like to buy it, but I'm worried at the possibility of a more serious problem with the top-end of the engine. For example would the MB dealer be able to diagnose?

On my test drive the car had full power and there was no exhaust smoke.

Also, is Techron a fuel aditive?

That ticking noise is just the fuel injectors pulsing off and on. No repair needed. You really dont hear it with the hood shut.

Robert is correct, all injectors. Not oil related.

My Dads 04 e55 Started making a lifter ticking noise at about 30K miles that was due to carbon build up. He always ran Chevron gas. Techron etc did not cure it and eventually the heads needed to come off the car. My SL55 makes some injector noise but nothing like the lifter ticking noise he experienced. I would look at a few other cars to see if they sound the same...

The sound of a 55K engine is very "mechanical". I can hear the valves of mine too. So, it might be normal...

But as said before, it's really hard to say without hearing the actualy sound.
