I added a shift knob and steering wheel from a SL55.
I also added custom painted black interior trim. A few months ago, I bought a spare aluminum trim set and had a buddy paint it in black (color matched to my car). I just finally got around to having it installed. I wanted to do carbon fiber, but the cost just turned me off. When I realized I could just have my trim painted black for a fraction of the price of carbon fiber, I decided to take that route.

Chipping/scratching is a concern especially with black paint. Black always shows imperfections. That said, the location of the trim does not really jeopardize it to much abuse. The door panel trim is almost never touched and the same goes for the center section. I was in the habit of tossing my cell phone onto the center section and I have stopped doing this now that I have the new trim installed as I don't want to mark it up.
If I could do it over again, I would have tried to locate a backup set in the wood trim. My friend who painted my trim had to use filler to even out the aluminum trim before he painted it so the finish would be smooth. This was an extra step for him and also increases the chance of cracking/chipping since there is now a thin layer of filler above the aluminum. The wood trim is already smooth so this would have not been required. Additionally, since the wood trim is REAL wood, I would think the paint might absorb on the wood trim better. But this is just a hypothesis.
Of course, you could also just paint the aluminum trim without using filler for a more "industrial" look.

My personal opinion: It looks like your car is black on red. Therefore I think black trim is the way to go. Red is already a strong color. Break it up a bit. I think red trim would be too much.

Interested in the shift handle
Cool. I'm curious to see how the trim would look just painted (without filler).

Sorry. Yes. I still have everything, but you and a few others only seem to be interested in the shift knob.
I'm waiting on a few perspective buyers who have expressed interest in both the knob and wheel.
I'm ready to break up the trim (2 side pieces + center) and wheel + shifter right now, but I want to wait a BIT longer before I separate the wheel and shift knob since I have some potential buyers nibbling on the hook for both.
