I also added a secondary VERY large 2nd Heat Exchanger up front as seen many times before on this forum. Cheap as I am I got a new but slightly damage unit for a good price. In front of this I placed two 6" fans running via thermostat placed between the outlet on the Heat Exchanger and the inlet of the pump. Here I am still wondering regarding at which temperature the fans shall kick in. The thermostat being mounted between the outlet of the heat exchanger and the inlet of the pump.
Then we come to the pump which original is a Bosh – changed it right away with a Johnson 30 and made a bushing in Teflon for easier reuse of the original bracket. Wiring also an easy change with plugs found in an old Volvo.
Wow, quality work ! I think your ACU looks almost like a factory fitted item !
Regarding the temperature setting of your HE fans, I am thinking maybe the most benefit will be when the car is stationary ? If your moving I would imagine the forward air flow will be greater than the fans throughput ?
I also made a new holding reservoir for cooling fluid in aluminium from a swirl pot. Had to cut to fit a lot and fabricate a new bracket – did look for an easier solution at the scrapyard but nothing there seems to give me the right feeling. Reservoir have a pressure cap, an outlet and a nipple for returns of air and coolant.

I haven’t hooked-up the fans yet but are working on it …… and they should only run when you are going of highway and are stuck in a que ….. this summer we reached 40 Celsius so I guess they will have a purpose. I have a 140 F and a 160 F thermostat but unsure which one to go for ……
After some adjustments of the bracket I decided to hook it up on the covering for the fan …. the lowest bracket not what I really wanted ….. will be change at another point in time …….. final result is fine and working …… solid as a rock
I can’t say that I am finished … guess nobody of us will ever be “finished” with our cars … but I am at a point where it was time to see if the motor and all will work – be running – as always keeping in mind I have never been turning a single nut on a car engine before. It was with some hesitations I turned the key ….. holding my breath ……. thinking what I would do if there came a terrible sound and oil on the floor ….. after so much work ……. keep in mind the car has been standing for 6 years!
Turn of the key and the engine started …. with some sound that I was kind of troubled but as it had been so many years since I heard it running I could not remember how it should sound. After some minutes I turned it of and inspected the engine bay and under the car …….. and oil was present.
After a closer look it turned out to come from the radiator for the ABC ,,,, even it looked brand new (bought on eBay used) it was leaking. Of with the bumper and disassembled the radiator …. made a by-pass – that will say running the ABC without cooling. (this should come back to haunt me at a later point)
Lights going off in the cluster saying low on different kinds of fluid …… tipped all of them up and started again …. transmission oil is especially difficult …… but now I could drive the car! …… had a run for 10 min and it all felt great )) the power is extreme even I was restrictive …… back home and some weeks later I did a diagnostic and cleared all codes … car running but not perfect ….. still need Eurocharge tune …. my concerns are the car feels “heavy” when starting in first gear ….. could be that the transmission fluid level are not 100% yet ….. also that I do not know my new K3000 converter …… sound is too much even several here on the forum said deleting first stage mufflers gave a real AMG sound – I think it’s too much so I will at a later point go back to the original … best will be half of the original … maybe the muffles itself could be modified.
Before really running the car I change the engine oil and filter …… examined both of them very carefully – everything was looking fine …….. no other signs of leaks so all covering underneath was also assembled.
Then being out for a longer run with my co-pilot (my son on 5) and he really enjoys the car … love it he says and we have to look at the car every evening before he goes to bed) ,,,,,, now on that trip I used the ABC levelling – up and down – as we have much uneven terrain here …. with the result the fluid got hot and without cooling it overflowed leaving oil in the engine bay and on the ground …….
On Monday going to MB dealer for wheel alignment and then after cleaning of oil - for control …… then we will see……
After been running the car for a week or more as a daily basis I have the following comments. It’s stronger as before but with the different upgrades it should be.
The car is running but not perfect – that said I don’t have any fault coming up and it went straight through control with no remarks what so ever. Considering I haven’t got the ECU tune and a TCU flash; then I am pleased. Most noticeable issue is when running in town with speed at 30 to 50 km. per hour gives some stuttering in the engine. It also appears when coming off the highway and down in lower speed of 50 – 60 km. some stuttering is felt.
Next up will be the ECU and TCU done – then change of several rubber bushing before wheel alignment. Then a upgrade of the LSD with a Quiafe and maybe looking into stylish upgrades too … not forgetting reinstalling the mufflers again …. all a winters project.
As a side note – and most important – my co-pilot is most satisfied by being delivered in Kindergarten in the SL55AMG …. makes quiet a spectacle among all the 5 years old “boys” down there J

Reason: spelling
Been years …… time fly’s a we fly’s with it … what can I say.
In all I am satisfied with the car how it is running – some alternations and additional upgrades need to be undertaken when time allows but what I did had to do was reset the exhaust system. Maybe because I am a European and not used to big engines as many Americans, I did think it was too loud – also I had resonance in the cabin at 50 – 60 km per hour with the top up.
The original AMG exhaust sound was too mild for me so what did I do? …. I took a stainless thin pipe that was an exact fit to go inside the muffler for cutting off three of the five “sound-traps”. The fitment was so tight that I had to fabricate a special tool to mount them.
After that I had the job of welding them back on the exhaust system ….. lots of work but I am most pleased with the sound now ---- also my son riding shotgun is pleased to be pick-up by me in the summer time – always asking me: “daddy – is it really allowed to go the fast here?”
