Question about the SL 55.....

Can the hardtop be operated by the remote, and will it function while the vehicle is moving?

The top can be opened by the Smartkey bu holding down the UNLOCK key while aiming it at the IR (?) thing on the door handle. Close it by holding LOCK.

It will open/close while moving but I wouldn't reccomend it. I have tried it at under 5 miles an hour while pulling into our garage.

For the R129, Renntech sold an update for the control unit that allowed top actuation at speeds up to 40mph. I don't know if they have it availabel for the R230. But you're only asking for damage to the motors.

If you are looking for a great car parachute, then i recommend opening the top at speed.

The smart key has radio and infra-red; the radio unlocks the car from a greater distance but will not open the roof, for that, you need to be close and use the IR. Since the IR is directional, I guess this is to avoid unintentional roof openings and maybe something to do with safety and security.

I believe the latest incarnation of the 911 Turbo allows its roof to be opened at speeds up to 30 kph, say 18 mph. Here in the UK, the police would probably have something to say about safe driving if you did. I once had a run-in with them for opening the roof while stopped at a stop light... I put it down to jealousy.

I think the issue of opening the roof while moving, even if the car allowed it, is twisting it out of alignment which could affect things like water sealing and wind-noise even if the parts of the roof didn't wind up scraping against each other.

Top opening

As above people say, you may open the top while very slow
moving .

I recommend strongly not to do.
I did it 3 times at reverse way. I mean I closed the top while slow
moving . At that time , no problem I had.

But later , when I open the top at the stop position(yes, parking
position!) , one of plastic covers ,which are installed at the sides of back glass, was suddenly broken during the opening peration.
(See the attached picture:FYI-this is not my car picture).

When you open the top, the steel part under the rubber
may push up and break the bottom part of that plastic cover
if there is a mis-alignment at the mechanism.

i had the same parts come off on my top around the rear window. they have a upgrade for the covers and the fasteners underneath. if it happens again check with the tech.
