Floating part in gas tank

Hi,
A couple of days ago, a sound comes from the trunk as if something is floating inside the gas tank. It's a really annoying sound. My technician says that there is now way to get the part out without cutting the tank and welding it back.

Does anyone knows what this is and if that is the only solution?

The top of the baffle in the tank has come loose. there's a fix with a spring, some have used magnets, some have simply bashed it until the baffle was wedged and stopped the bonking.

Yep, loose fuel baffle. One of the notorious SL (R230) maladies. I had this same issue as has a number of members. The dealer replaced the tank for me under my extended warranty. I don't remember the cost exactly, but thinking it is about 4k. Tons of labor as they have to take apart about half of the car.

Super Monkey has a pretty good solution that seems to have worked.

Good Luck!

Currently: 2019 E450 AWD, Previous: 2002 CLK55 Cab
Are there particular years when this defect cropped up?

I had the same fuel tank baffle issue when I had my old 2003 AMG. Cost about $900 for the tank and about $1000 labor. Yes, this is a known issue within MB AMG owners.
