SL55/63/65/R230 AMG: Help. Heat from transmission area 09 sl 63
I posted this in another forum also
I purchased a 09 sl 63 Amg and when the top is down I get heat generated from the transmission area. It also warms up by the ashtray and side panels. It gets worse the faster I go
When top is closed I have no warmth coming from the area
Car has been to 2 dealers and both claim. Nothing is wrong no open insulation or anything
I am extremely uncomfortable driving with the top open and feeling heat there and in the foot well area
Again when top is closed the cabin is pressurized and no temp issues
I don't know what to do at this point

faulty cats, can also produce alot of heat.
Aftermarket exhaust systems with race cats could cause ALOT of heat extraction where you described it.
Race cats actually cause ALOT of heat as well as faulty converters,
cases with faulty cats are known, without PCM throwing any CEL codes.
Sometimes stock headers are also known to extract alot of heat.
I doubt its the transmission...
If you can, jack the car up and post a picture from underneath, directly from where you think the heat comes...all of us here will have it alot of easier to help you out!
Might even be you have a nice aftermarket exhaust system, that none of the mechs you were wont tell you ;-)
Well......we can!
Oh and when youre anyway at, pop the hood and take a picture of the headers...talking about header gaskets might went down south, too.

In addition the air injection pump should be checked for shutting off after 60-120 seconds post cold start. Failure to shut off pump will result in very hot cats.
Before you do any of the above flog your car a bit and see if temps go down on subsequent drives due to cat unclogging.
Also check ATF level and color. Check for burnt smell. It could be your transmission although a cat is more likely.
Btw, they run hot. Not viper- hot, but still the tunnel can get pretty hot.

my '09 sl63 has over 15k miles (i am the original owner) and i never had any heat issues whatsoever.
how about putting the car on a hoist and "looking" at the bottom of the vehicle with a thermal imaging camera, the type used to check a home for insulation defects?

...thermal imaging camera will tell you nothing, other than areas that are hot. What you need to use is a; LCD Digital Infrared Thermometer [$16.96 free delivery]
they give you the exact temp for anything you point the laser at. I use one to check my wheels / brakes on each 4, to see if any discs are grabbing & also an early warning of impending wheel bearing issues etc.
