Is it worth it.

Yesterday I had new spark plugs and a new ic pump ( Bosch ) fitted.
On the way home if anything it felt slower. Over the years I have spent
a fortune on modify cars, and I can honestly say it was the expectation
that was fun, the end result rarely impressed me. Is this what is being
called a petrol head is, spending a fortune for enjoyment and being
if you told the truth extra power which can't be felt after a couple of days.
If you think about it an extra 50hp on a 500 bhp engine is 10% can you
really feel that, and in terms of hardware it may cost 10 grand.
Chipping a car I think is good value, take my Cosworth 2008 bhp standard
with a chip change 280 bhp and the cost 500 quid. That's around 38%
extra. Maybe you should just buy a GTR it's cheap and very quick and
very UGLY.. Chipping the new SL63 was easy to feel the extra power,
trouble is the exhaust got harsher with loads more wastegate noise.

SL 55 and a GT 3000 vr4 Here's my car: http://home.online.no/~ludvs/index.cfm
About changing cars

I'm also thinking about buying a GTR.

But ONLY as the second car.

The reason is simple, you get a car that is very quick and reliable.

That's the two reasons I want in an all of the year car, communting to work, and have the occasional fast ride in.

But as stated in different reviews, it is simply to rough when you want just to go cruising. You will be getting tired of the noise after a short distance.

And if you're thinking of a nice interiour, forget it. Even my 1991 gt3000 looks better inside, but the outside is really nice and tough looking.
I simply love the rear lights and the front and side is also looking the part.

So after you have had your "fun" in the GTR it's a place like no other to come back to your old R230 car.

I can't express enough how much I love these cars.

First thing is the interior, if you look at the dashboard design, it is simply the best looking i've ever seen in a mercedes.

If you take the previous generation, and the next, those have the typically "flat" plank like dashboard with the sharp edges in the middle console going up to the dashboard.
On our cars, the middle console lines flow much more in a sweeping way against the dashboard.
It's these little things I like in our cars, I think our interiour will not be beaten in the forseeable future.

And the outside lines is also super nice of course.

Yeh, I agree, to have a tatty GTR bristling with horse power, you can go and
blow a few cars away.
Here in the UK you just don't get that many super cars on the road, and the
ones you see are Porsche boxter, old Jags things that my 65 can handle.
What has become apparent is something you said some years ago about
the 230 shape that was iconic, every time I see my new (old ) 65 I grow
fonder of it's shape. In fact my car had something called Star Gard body
and interior protection, and the body still has a glass finish and the interior
is like new. I suppose it's my age, but I go more for looks now.
Maybe the 63 bi turbo with re map has spoilt me for power.
But as I said before speed is not the only important thing, it is definitely
looks, change wheels, lowering, bits of kit is better to spend your money on.
I imagine you get takers all the time, on TV it's always away from the lights.
There just isn't the cars in the UK, I suppose having under your bonnet(hood) dressed so it looks good body and engine.
So Saturday tomorrow and time for another polish on my Princess. Is it worth it.-dscn0986.jpg
