How many SL600TT/65 owners running on original coilpacks?

So coilpacks are considered a maintenance item when owning an SL600/65 but how many of you are still running your original coilpacks?

What are you driving habits, oil change intervals, and anything else you can think of that contributes to the longevity of your coilpacks.

I believe mine are original, but not totally sure.

I have only had it about 5 months. Its had an oil change at the stealer. Daily Driver until a few weeks ago. In the garage for most of the winter now.

The original packs are on my 65 with ~45K. It is Kleemann tuned but that is about it.

How many miles you put with the Kleemann tune? I notice everyone on MBWorld claims after few weeks with a tune the original coilpacks die...

'94 SL600,'05 SL600,'06 S65,'07 E63,'14 E63S,'09SL600 all sold, ‘15 S65,‘18 E63S,'17 SL65, '17S65Cab
Our 2005 SL600 had one original, one replacement coilpack when we sold it late last year. Mileage was about 70k, it had a Eurocharged tune. Our S65 has had both coilpacks replaced, the car has just short of 80k miles and a Eurocharged tune. The 2009 SL600 has the original coilpacks, it has about 19k miles on it, no aftermarket tune.
We drive all our cars similar, total run time is about half local, half freeway. Total miles are about 80% freeway.

So why does the tune kill the coil packs?

I disagree, the #1 factor to coil pack failure is the car is sensitive to fuel grade. If you constantly put in cheap fuel (lack of clean agents/additives) or even put lower than 91 octane you are asking for trouble.

I've got 77K miles on mine, original coil packs and religiously filled with 91 octane Chevron/Shell.

I use non ethanol 92 octane. Every now and then I have to use an ethanol added 92 octane.

I have one original (left) and one replacement with 44k miles. My mods are a ModernHorsepower tune (ECU and TCU) and Meisterschaft exhaust. Oil is changed religiously at 5k.

Anyone try aftermarket coil packs? Standard ignition has one, they make a lot of ignition parts. Not sure it's worth trying for a ~$200 savings.

Hi Keith, small world

You may want to look at Autozone. They have a sale going on right now.
20% off and free shipping. They also have a lifetime warranty. If I needed one that's where Id go.

Hey Todd,

Thanks for the heads up. I ended up ordering the Autozone piece. Saved almost enough money to pay for 24 spark plugs.
