Autobild Test: Gallardo/Viper/SL55

The SL55 really show up well performance wise despite carrying so much more weight

...and the SL would have been closer to the Gallardo if the top speed were not limited, not relevant for the great majority of potential owners anyway.

I think the Gallardo looks very sharp and is a well deserved winner. The extra weight imposed on the SL by the roof - not just the bits that move but the underlying additional strengthening required is the Achilles heel of the car, but it does come out well.

EVO Test

I believe the Brit magazine EVO did a test a couple of years ago pitting the SL55 against a Ferrari 550, Lambo Mucielago, 996 Tubo and an AM Vanquish.

The 55 out ran the 550 and the AM no problem. It was just edged out to 60 by the 996 and then the 55 walked away and I believe the 55 out ran the Lambo to 150.

As they had a derestricted car it finished 2nd in top speed 202...vs the Lambo's 205.

It was especially good on the British B roads that they ran on.

Not bad for a car with all the toys.

I know that this is a pretty good estimation of the 55 as I track mine and there are very few cars that can stay with it.

Im not sure what to make of this......sure my SL55 is fast. But maybe the european versions are much faster, not just a little faster. Tests show that it does low 13's @ 111 mph in the 1/4 mile, although i have never taken mine to the drag strip. Low 13's are not super-car in my opinion. If it was doing low 12's then id be dam proud. But this car is just too heavy. I dont see how it can beat some of these cars. The only explanation i have is euro versions.

Feel free to add.

I have had my 55 at the track on several occasions and other than adjusting my turn in points due to the weight of the car....it absolutely humiliates just about everything out there....and I'm on street tires!

That test that I quoted earlier was in Autocar, not Evo. The SL's time to 300kph was 32 sec, the Mucielago did it in 34 sec, Porsche Turbo in 40, 550 Maranello in 63sec! I don't remember the Vanquish...but it was slower than the 550

I can't wait to get some slicks!

Sorry to disappoint but the SL55 that did 0-300kph in 32 seconds, was actually a prototype car for the SLR engine and was putting out 617bhp!

In reality the 55's do 0-300kph in about 43-48 seconds...

That info was from a good friend who happens to know AMG engineers and inside intel, which he can't divulge for obvious reasons...

There is no way a stock delimited SL with 500bhp will do 0-300 in 32 seconds, like it or leave it. That particular SL was a testbed for the SLR engine. When AMS wanted a protototype SL55 for the comaprison test, Daimlchrysler handed them this one with 617bhp, and well you know the rest...AMG was not happy about this since it wasn't s stock car.

Whether you believe it or not is up to you.

i doubt this, as on an AMG SL55 brochure which i read, it stated that it was the quickest to 300 than all the othe supercars like the diablo, porsche wateve and so on. I dont think that AMG or Mercedes would advertise this if it was not true or a stock car.

If the car wasn't stock, then the 0-100kmh and 400m results woul dbe faster than the stock SL55. Is this so?
