I have to believe they are worth having; However, I have read that many of the parts in the system are aluminum. Some of the parts look to me to be stainless which is also not very magnetic depending upon the alloy.

The pump may be the primary part of the system that is steel (to deal with the 3,000 psi pressure production). I first discovered the ~$100 filter described above about 18 months ago - it was only available in Germany at the time, for 100 euro plus shipping. BUT, nobody at the company there would respond to e-mails (or telephone calls from people I know in Deutschland). So, like carguyshu above, I bought the $15 Magnefine filter (1/2" nipples) for $15 (on eBay), including shipping. Have had it installed for about 14 months and only a couple of thousand miles. Sometime this winter, I'll replace it with a new one and cut up the old one to see if there is any 'metal dust' attached to the magnets. My reasoning was that fine metal particles or those that have oxidized to rust could damage the pump, so best to get them attached to a magnet and fully out of circulation (might be smaller than 3 microns???).

Please post the results when you cut up the old one. I am very curious what you will find.

No matter the outcome, I still think a magnet is cheap insurance for a very expensive system.

2006 CL600
Hey guys, I was reading this thread and thought it was a great idea as well. Question on the install: I have 2 resevoirs on my CL600, do I put it on the upper or lower one? They both have filters inside them so thought I'd ask for clarification if one of them is better than the other?

Regards

the upper one is for power steering and is smaller. the larger lower one is for ABC.

I'm planning an ABC Fluid Change and have purchased "
Magnefine 1/2" Magnetic Inline Transmission Filter Magnefine 1/2" Magnetic Inline Transmission Filter
" which I'm planning to install on the hose connected to the ABC fluid tank.
So is the flow from the holding tank a discharge direction of flow? Then after a few thousand miles I'll retro-fill the fluid again and replace the filter.

I can't speak for every model year, but on the 2003 SL55 I have, the rubber hose coming into the side of the ABC reservoir is the return hose from the strut system. That is where the Magnefine filter is inserted, with flow going into the reservoir.
