I guess if you are just replacing the long block, and installing the original pieces (injectors, throttle body, etc.) it would be a good idea to match the production year as some parts changed over time. You state that the ringland issue was corrected, but did the piston shape or compression change as well?
I do know that the 2007/2008 SL55 230 motors had the most refinements of the "55" engine - but internally, I don't know what, if any, changes were made.

i believe it was just a poor batch of pistons as they’re all the same as far as compression and bore size throughout the m113k. I’m not concerned with keeping the same year components as this is just a project car that’s going to go through a ton of abuse.
