Replacing the longblock in my 03 E55 and have come across a few r230 engines. I know in the w211 cars the 03 was the "weakest" engine with ringland issues that seemed to have been corrected in the years after. Are there any issues similar to this with the sl55 cars, and what is the best year engine to go after? Thanks.

I guess if you are just replacing the long block, and installing the original pieces (injectors, throttle body, etc.) it would be a good idea to match the production year as some parts changed over time. You state that the ringland issue was corrected, but did the piston shape or compression change as well?
I do know that the 2007/2008 SL55 230 motors had the most refinements of the "55" engine - but internally, I don't know what, if any, changes were made.
