Coolant Temp on STAR - SL55
Hi all,
so there’s a few problems with my SL55, which I’m trying to tackle with my mechanic. He’s ex Mercedes main dealer and has the STAR system, which obviously helps a great deal. However the problems aren’t causing codes, which makes things a bit more difficult - and they’re not common ones...
one thing we noticed that could be the cause of many issues (eg intermittent power loss NOT related to intake temp - so not the inter cooler pump) is that the timing is ALWAYS restarted seriously - like 25 to 35 degrees!
Having read that the car retards the timing under certain extreme coolant temps, we looked into this. The reading was in the “other values” section of STAR. It says Coolant Temp (ADC): -267.66 degrees - or something very similar.
now I’m pretty sure my engine isn’t cooled by liquid nitrogen, so the questions I have are:
1) this indicates an issue right? It’s not a known quirk of STAR?
2) most likely culprit - is it the sensor?
3) if so, where is the sensor located, and does anyone have a part number?
4) any ideas what else would retard the timing that much?
any help would be most appreciated. There’s a few more questions I’m keen to ask, as the knowledge here is incredible... however it’s probably best for me to stick to one issue at a time...
thanks in advance,
J

If the instrument cluster temperature gauge is displaying a plausible temperature, then it is a quirk in Star Diagnosis; otherwise it is an issue with the coolant temperature sensor, wiring, or the engine management ECU.
