SL55/63/65/R230 AMG: What the hell is going on with my steering angle sensor? ESP defective, need help!
I bought a used steering column assembly from eBay that had the stalks, clock spring, plastic shield/cover (essentially the whole unit that slips over the steering column.
I installed this unit and stupidly didn't road test the car until two weeks later. Whenever I drove the car, the SRS light was on and DAS displayed an error stating that the clockspring was bad but the turn signals were working correctly again.
I contacted the seller and he sent me out another complete unit. After doing the swap, the clock spring issue was fixed but now when I turn the car on and get the error stating that "ESP is unavailable". I turn the steering wheel left to right or lock to lock and then get an error message stating "ESP defective". If I turn the car on/off, the same thing happens again.
I hooked up DAS and got the error codes C11B7 and C14B7 for the steering angle sensor. I tried swapping out the sensor (part # 0025421718) between the two units but can't get a resolution. One sensor states that the steering wheel is at -647 degrees and the other sensor says 288 degrees when the steering wheel and front wheels are pointed straight ahead.
I went through every option in DAS looking for a steering angle reset or something to that effect and the closest thing I found was for the initialization. It tells you to remove the old unit and install the new unit while in DAS to complete the initialization of which I tried.
I guess it's possible that both steering angle sensors are bad but I would imagine that the chances of that are slim. Is there a step that I'm missing or something here? I have another SL here that I can cannibalize for it's steering angle sensor but don't want to mess it up in case I'm doing something wrong during the install.
Any help would be appreciated!
